This study did not double count people who were infected multiple times.


The really important number to know is the portion of the population that is seronegative - people who aren’t vaccinated and who have never had covid. Anything over 10% is enough to put the healthcare system at risk.

A place like China may be closer to 30%. Essentially the entire unvaccinated population. If they don’t control the spread of Omicron, they’re fucked. Their vaccine probably will do a decent job of preventing severe illness, it is likely useless in preventing Omicron infection.

If you look at the Dutch graphs, they paint an optimistic picture.

If you however look at the Dutch covid viral load of raw sewage, then there has never been this much active Covid as now.

They are testing sewage for the craziest things, even cocaine metabolites so that they can know the usage pattern of a city.

I heard a virologist say they should be testing for lots of endemic viruses. He said if they tested for polio, they wouldn’t like what they see.

It looks like we've thoroughly proven that prematurely getting rid of public health measures promotes the spread of disease. It reminds me of when john snow figured out that a certain well was the source of a cholera epidemic and took the handle off that well to stop people from using it but then kept arbitrarily putting it back on as soon as cholera cases went down a little bit so people would quit bitching about having to walk a little farther just to get safe drinking water and avoid dying of dehydration.

Yeah Covid is exponentially worse than polio, almost everyone who gets polio is asymptomatic or just light cold symptoms. A serious case would get national attention instantly though, assuming it was correctly diagnosed.

Masks ARE effective in some scenarios ...

They are nowhere near 100% effective , we know.

I think once delta hit the typical cloth mask only really protected the wearer or those around them a very small percentage of the time, good vs droplets but not great for longer durations in an environment where the virus is in the air.

Hospital grade surgical masks faired much better, I remember seeing multiple studies that basically boiled down to 2 people wearing a surgical mask 3 feet away from each other could have a conversation for about 50 minutes before infection was likely. That dropped with omicron, but still enough that they made sense in most public settings. I wore only a surgical mask on a handful of occasions while working with an unmasked patient who was then found to be covid +, the mask kept me from getting infected while in 2 of those instances their visitor (who was unmasked in the room) later ended up infected. Even though surgical masks aren't a perfect fit their level of mechanical filtration is sufficient, and the slight electrostatic charge (what makes N95's so effective) helps catch a portion of any particles entering through the gaps

Should have been a push for n95's from the beginning though, or at least KN95's. I still wear a KN95 when I'll be in a large group of people for a long time, mostly just because I don't want to have miss any more days of work if I get infected again. I'm just enjoying the lull now of not having to wear a face shield all day, and gown/gloves/N95 for a large portion. The next wave will hit soon enough though as the collective antibody levels wane and new strains emerge

I was wearing an N95 at work for a while, but the low temperature caused condensation to the point that the inside of my mask was visibly wet.

Yeah China has done a very poor job of vaccinating their elderly population. We’re at something like 95% in the US. They are closer to 80%

Not having previous waves also means very little naturally acquired immunity in the population.

This is what omicron is like if you don’t have any immunity. It’s not mild.
