Last week there were 2,000+ covid deaths a day in the US, I still spend half my work day treating covid patients. Yesterday I had a 35 year old and 42 year old, both with trachs, feeding tubes, picc line, oxygen etc (we refer to this typical post-covid combo as "the works), over a month from their infection. Neither can walk or dress themselves anymore, they'll be shitting into a bedpan for the foreseeable future.

There will be a new variant that evades immunity soon enough, likely around summer time based on the current/past pace of variants. For people who are healthy and have had recent exposures (through boosters or infection), or multiple past exposures, it'll hopefully just be a cold for most. For those with no or only one past exposure, and also the millions of immunosuppressed people, it'll keep destroying lives and killing. Some future variants will be weaker, and most likely some will be deadlier.

It's cute that people want pretend we're "done with Covid", but it's here to stay. Doesn't mean we have to be afraid of it, but people fantasizing about it being over and saying dumb things about it as some weird political virtue signal or whatever doesn't help anything, and definitely doesn't change reality.

Here I was thinking Trump and the Jan 6th crew best exemplified the totalitarian threat we should be worried about. I guess I had it all wrong.

It's crazy to me that people will quote Bezmenov and not see that the "useful idiot" stuff applies best to far right thugs. The propaganda methods are essentially the same as Bezmenov described, only over social media, but now the end goal after regime collapse is Putin style ethnonationalism instead of Soviet socialism. It's pretty repetitive.

Those that blindly accuse everyone else of being brainwashed by "mainstream media" and the lying politicians/corporations/pharma etc... usually got the basis of their ideas, and most of their information about the world, from grifters who are lying to and brainwashing them for ad revenue, patreon subs, or supplement sales... or possibly even just state-sponsored misinformation trolls/bots which are proven time and time again to populate all forms of social media, intent on sowing chaos and confusion and distrust in the intuitions that keep western societies functional.

Parsing vast amounts of data in an unbiased way just doesn't seem like something the human brain is very good at, it's much easier to just pick whichever story you like better and convince yourself of the rest of it from there. Once you start turning reality into story land it's a hard rabbit hole to climb yourself out of, playing fantasy is much more fun than reality.

Millions of people won't trust a stringently regulated medical product that's gone through clinical trials and been analyzed by top scientists and governmental as well as independent research labs and universities and hospitals around the world, but they'll believe that ivermectin will cure their dying relative because a handful of doctors (almost all with sketchy pasts) who make millions prescribing/selling ivermectin told them so. They like that story better, they get to not only be a rebel fighting the corrupt establishment but also be smarter than everyone else in that story.
