I've successfully used calcium supplents for reptiles. You can find it in any pet store for about 3 bux. It's in a white powdered form. And yes, crushed egg shells work well too.

Yes, drug store. Caltrate is a brand name you can get. It often comes as Calcium + Vitamin D. I don't think your shroomies need vitamin D, so be sure to just get plain ol Calcium (the back will say Calcium Carbonate)

Was I mistaken or did I read in the one of these replies that chalk works as calcium carbonate?

yeah, i don't know about the chalk.... anyways I went down to petsmart looking for a cuttlebone and ended up finding "Jurassi Cal". It's a calcium supplement for Reptiles and Amphibians and the ingredients is Calcium Carbonate. It was 4.99 US, pretty expensive for the most common mineral in the world, but I was still glad to see it =). I'll probably also crush up the egg shells from this morning and use that as well. thx for the replies guys.

Also, if you're using crushed oyster shell anyway, just throw some of that in the blender and turn it into a powder. Works pretty well.

yes, but don't grind up blackboard chalk. I don't think that's calcium carbonate. Go to a construction warehouse... they have the right stuff there usually.

The reptile stuff is good, it's called calci-sand, 99% pure calcium carbornate. It comes in all colors, including glow-in-the-dark(makes for cool casings) I believe T-rex makes it. apotheke is an apothecary, basically yes, a drug store. mycomancer

aWwwWWwWwWw....... my casing looks Beautiful.......
you guys shoulda seen my cakes......... I dunked them, they ended up leaking so i had to transfer them into heavier duty baggies... then they got contaminated by trichoderma mold.... so i cut off all edges put them back in there original jars and waited till they recolonized teh outside... then crumpled and cased...
they didn't soak too well in baggies either.... i had to then transfer them into a large tea jar and added the 1 part bleach to 200 parts water... also used quite a bit of H202, but they still didn't come through.

No construction warehouse, a store with supplies for the garden is better IMHO.

many Calcium carbonate brands (or lime) burn shrooms.
I think we all need an expert to recomend a trustable BRAND, and maybe even a link ... something that will work 4 sure
THANX!!
