Wood loving Psilocybe Mushroom - P. pelliculosa? * 1
    #27555130 -

Dear Shroomery community,

Today I found a mushroom, maybe you can help me identify it.
The fungus grows on mulch and crushed garden waste and had a suspicious blue bruising.
The blue coloration occurred primarily on the edge of the hat and on the base of the stem, where the mycelium was.
The hat shape was bell-shaped with an inwardly curved edge.
In addition, the edge of the hat was translucent and the hat skin was easy to peel off and was transparent and thin compared to that of P. cyanescens.
Older specimens tear at the edge of the hat.
The taste was similar to other Psilocybe mushrooms. The odor was a bit strange, like Psilocybe with a slight chlorine-like note.
The fruiting body was also hygrophanous.
The location was north side behind a hedge in east Germany.
The nighttime temperatures were around zero and daytime around 10 °C.

Older specimen at the end of the folding rule:

Hygrophanous cap:

Removable thin skin:

Mycelium:

I also could share images with microscopic details.

I've lookd into Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World: An Identification Guide from Stamets and I'm not sure if it is P. pelliculosa.
P. pelliculosa appears to have straight long stems and a more regular shaped cap. The colors are also different.

I agree with Pelliculosa.

Thank you for reply. Can you please explain the characteristics by which you determine the identification?

In east Germany?

Looks like Psilocybe bohemica to me.

Without putting emphasis on either possibility, the location does not exclude P. pelliculosa, given
that this species showed up in Norway quite recently.

It should be possible to separate the two from spore size, I guess. Otherwise I believe the shape of
cheilocystidia is more or less similar in both species, as well as the presence of clamp connections.

Separation is also possible on the basis of habitat. Serbica group does not ever grow in wood chip mulch, similar to behavior of caerulipes. It grows on well composted forest wood. Mycelium probably likes highly dense substrate if I am to assume.
I've only ever seen serbica "var bohemica" in woodchips once, but I suspect it's some other missidentified woodlover in question (possibly pelliculosa). Since pelliculosa has been genetically confirmed in Norway as stated by Anglerfish, I'm fairly certain this might be pelliculosa as well. It's probably spreading further south as we speak, due to the increasing use of woodchips in continental Europe.

Macroscopically and microscopically a good match for Psilocybe pelliculosa.  If it is, this would be the first time it's been found in Germany.    Psilocybe medullosa is another possibility.    Either way it's a pretty important find since neither species has been recorded from Germany.

Insane ! Psychoactive mushrooms hunting in Europe is getting more interesting with each passing day. Pelliculosa appearing in Norway and in Germany for the first time ever, Anglerfish finding mysterious Gymnopilus, elusive fimetaria is getting understood better and heavily researched, semilanceata found in my country for the first time (must brag a bit sry :sun:), and we have serbica complex which is very wild and unpredictable in its habits.

Great time to be alive and be into eu psyhoactive mushroom scene.

Don’t op pics lol like subsectoids? Or a variant close to them. ?
CaptainFuture has been a living spore trail in Germany for decades it’s not far fetched to think subsectiod like cultivar could spread eventually

Was anyone able to to genetic analysis?
I did some cloning attempts on different agar medias which should available next days.
Nevertheless, do you have any other hints for identification which i can conduct?

In my eyes, not even close. I ve seen a lot of sub-s during nz season and this is definetely not sub-s. I learned about oceanic psilocybe identification from the Overlord himself. Overlord is dead, but his legacy lives.

On the more serious note - if the spores somehow made it, climate is still very wrong.

Not really. But species like P. semilanceata and P. pelliculosa will regularly have an incurved cap margin like these do, and at
least in the former species it will sometimes appear almost secotioid.

As for CF and his cultivation projects, he is as far as I know located in the western parts of Germany.

Send them to
http://www.alvalab.es/

It costs about 20€ total for dna analysis. You just send two dried mushrooms via ordinary letter. Do ITS region sequence and report back.

Calibrate the scope using stage micrometer and measure the spore size.

For are more precise location: The mushrooms are found on the foot of the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) / Saxony. 400m over NN.

Here is a picture of my 0.1mm grading calibration slide with 40x obective:
So 970px should be around 0.1mm

So if I wasn't wrong, the spore in top of 40x image should be 12µm x 6.9µm

Did you try a measuring software, like Piximetre for instance?
You'll need to measure a certain amount of spores to be able
to tell the general spore size. An assumption based on one
spore only isn't sufficient, especially since the spore size of
P. serbica is just marginally larger than those of P. pelliculosa.
