Auto-SummaryThis forum post discusses the complexities surrounding COVID-19 vaccination hesitancy, emphasizing that many people view the virus as a potential risk rather than an inevitability. The author criticizes misinformation spread on social media that clouds people's judgment and makes them distrust experts. They argue that getting vaccinated requires active engagement and understanding, which many avoid due to various reasons, including political polarization and denial. The post highlights the author's personal experience treating COVID patients, noting that some patients deny the virus and blame others for their exposure. The author stresses that COVID is likely to become endemic, requiring long-term preparation. They share their mother's experience with a vaccine study, where she showed no immune response due to chemo treatment, emphasizing the risks for unvaccinated individuals who put themselves and others at risk. The author concludes by expressing personal discomfort with not getting vaccinated, but acknowledges that judgment should be avoided as there are many contributing factors.
feevers said: I think many people may recognize the possible risks and dangers of Covid but they still see it as a “maybe”, to them it’s something that they might get (they don’t understand the inevitability) but it’s still pretty abstract and easy to be passive and just not think about. The misinformation that social media is flooded with scares the shit out of a lot of people, and is designed to make them see anything coming from experts (so, literally all actual data/facts) as ‘exactly what they want you to think” and fraudulent.
Contrast that with the choice to get the vaccine, which forces them to let their defenses down and also make an active choice to face reality in that moment and do something that a large part of their mind is convinced is far more risky than it actually is. To people who are better informed it’s incredibly easy to look at the facts and the numbers and make the exponentially less risky choice that also clearly benefits society, but many people just don’t have that ability for a variety of reasons. It’s especially easy to be misinformed when things get tribal with politics and “us vs them” narratives, which has contributed to weird and truly twisted shit on both sides of the argument.
When I treat Covid patients they’re typically at the stage where they’re beginning rehab and working to get some of their functioning and independence back, many are fresh off the vent and just starting to come to terms with what happened. Many also dig themselves further into denial. It’s typically not blaming the doctors or denying that covid exists, more just them blaming those around them... saying things like “My sister went to that party and brought that stupid virus to our house when she came over that Tuesday, this is all her fault!”, acting as if they were taking all the precautions and would have breezed through the pandemic if not for that one event. Their reasons for not getting vaxxed are all over the place.
As Asante said, Covid is not going anywhere. I forget the exact sources but I believe I’ve read statements from people at the WHO, Harvard and other major institutions acknowledging what’s been obvious for awhile now (without forced vaccination), that herd immunity simply won’t be reached and we need to prepare for it to be endemic with ever changing variants.
My mother is in a vaccine study for immunosuppressed people, after 2 doses of Pfizer she showed zero immune response, she was on chemo that specifically targeted B cells which play a large role in Covid immunity and there’s no telling if/when her immune system will recover. She got a 3rd booster a couple weeks back and had symptoms after, she’ll be undergoing testing next week so hopefully she’s got some immunity after the 3rd. Every unvaccinated person puts themselves at greater risk of getting the virus, being a carrier/spreader for longer, and therefore leaving everyone else around them at greater risk once they get exposed, which they will. This is particularly dangerous for the other unvaccinated people but also the immunosuppressed or those who didn’t respond to the vaccine for other reasons, the millions of people who are still at extremely high risk of being ruined or killed by Covid even after vaccination.
With the current circumstances (the vaccine being so safe, the virus being so prevalent) not getting vaccinated is a choice that would personally make me feel like a shitty person, plain and simple. As I talked about above though I try not to really judge others for it, there are so many factors at play and we all make dumb choices not understanding the reach of their consequences. There are many people making the choice because they truly are bad human beings, but it’s no where near all of them.
Those who are most at risk (like my mother) realistically just need to protect themselves at this point and the foreseeable future, N95’s are widely available and testing in most areas is accessible, life won’t go back to ‘normal’ for a while if ever for them. My mother knows to get tested at the first signs of symptoms, and I sent her a link to the closest monclonal antibody site for if she does get a positive or is even exposed (they allow at-risk people with known exposures to be treated), it’s not ideal but it’s the best we got right now. Lots of people don’t have the resources to protect themselves though, they’re living or working in situations that leave them constantly exposed and they may not be able to afford a change. Again, I’d feel like a shitty human if I wasn’t taking an extremely small step to help protect those millions of people in our society. That’s not saying anything about anyone else, those who see a statement like that as a judgement or insult may want to consider why it makes them feel so defensive.
Ca: Fading adderrall if it’s not obvious from the huge rambling post Going to be piling on the hours at work starting on Monday and I guess my buzzed brain needed to make one last long covid post
