Basement Incubation

Hi,
I'm having a problem getting the inoculation chamber I made to 80-86 degrees. You see, I'm growing in the basement where the room temp is 60 degrees. I tried the tub in tub with no success. I tried using one container and putting a ~4 liter container of water with a fish tank heater inside. No luck. I even lined the inside of the container with that metal looking insulation that's supposed to trap heat. I'm currently using a 5-15 gallon heater. Do your think I should get a bigger one? Moving the jars outside the basement is out of the question. Any help would be most appreciated.

As long as you get it in the 70s it will fruit, it will just take longer. Try to get it as near to 80 as you can, wrapping the whole thing in towels might help also.

Get the 30-60 gallon aquarium heater at wallmart. Fill the bottom of a tote with water about 4-5 inches (I also use some of a 3% h202). Use small glasses to prop the second tote (I use those mini tupperware containers, 4 of them). I wrap the 2nd tote in 2 layers of aluminum foil just to keep ALL light out. Set heater on about med setting. Put in thermometer and forget for a while (over 2 hours), check thermometer and tweak as needed. One thing that might help, is keep the damn thing off your cement floor. Maybe put some wood or something underneath it.

Use your tub-in-tub, just throw a blanket over it. It makes a big difference.

Buy another rubbermaid tub that is larger, one that you can fit your tub in tub incubator in. Fill in the air around the tub in tub with, something to insulate(towel, insulation, polyfil, blankets, etc.) See if this works, it should. Also, you could try using a higher wattage heater but your problem probably lies with keeping the heat from dispersing into your basement's colder air.
