Auto-Summary
This forum post discusses the complexities surrounding COVID-19 vaccination hesitancy, emphasizing that many people view the virus as a potential risk rather than an inevitability. The author criticizes misinformation spread on social media that clouds people's judgment and makes them distrust experts. They argue that getting vaccinated requires active engagement and understanding, which many avoid due to various reasons, including political polarization and denial. The post highlights the author's personal experience treating COVID patients, noting that some patients deny the virus and blame others for their exposure. The author stresses that COVID is likely to become endemic, requiring long-term preparation. They share their mother's experience with a vaccine study, where she showed no immune response due to chemo treatment, emphasizing the risks for unvaccinated individuals who put themselves and others at risk. The author concludes by expressing personal discomfort with not getting vaccinated, but acknowledges that judgment should be avoided as there are many contributing factors.

I think many people may recognize the possible risks and dangers of Covid but they still see it as a “maybe”, to them it’s something that they might get (they don’t understand the inevitability) but it’s still pretty abstract and easy to be passive and just not think about.  The misinformation that social media is flooded with scares the shit out of a lot of people, and is designed to make them see anything coming from experts (so, literally all actual data/facts) as ‘exactly what they want you to think” and fraudulent.

Contrast that with the choice to get the vaccine, which forces them to let their defenses down and also make an active choice to face reality in that moment and do something that a large part of their mind is convinced is far more risky than it actually is. To people who are better informed it’s incredibly easy to look at the facts and the numbers and make the exponentially less risky choice that also clearly benefits society, but many people just don’t have that ability for a variety of reasons. It’s especially easy to be misinformed when things get tribal with politics and “us vs them” narratives, which has contributed to weird and truly twisted shit on both sides of the argument.

When I treat Covid patients they’re typically at the stage where they’re beginning rehab and working to get some of their functioning and independence back, many are fresh off the vent and just starting to come to terms with what happened. Many also dig themselves further into denial. It’s typically not blaming the doctors or denying that covid exists, more just them blaming those around them... saying things like “My sister went to that party and brought that stupid virus to our house when she came over that Tuesday, this is all her fault!”, acting as if they were taking all the precautions and would have breezed through the pandemic if not for that one event. Their reasons for not getting vaxxed are all over the place.

As Asante said, Covid is not going anywhere. I forget the exact sources but I believe I’ve read statements from people at the WHO, Harvard and other major institutions acknowledging what’s been obvious for awhile now (without forced vaccination), that herd immunity simply won’t be reached and we need to prepare for it to be endemic with ever changing variants.

My mother is in a vaccine study for immunosuppressed people, after 2 doses of Pfizer she showed zero immune response, she was on chemo that specifically targeted B cells which play a large role in Covid immunity and there’s no telling if/when her immune system will recover. She got a 3rd booster a couple weeks back and had symptoms after, she’ll be undergoing testing next week so hopefully she’s got some immunity after the 3rd. Every unvaccinated person puts themselves at greater risk of getting the virus, being a carrier/spreader for longer, and therefore leaving everyone else around them at greater risk once they get exposed, which they will. This is particularly dangerous for the other unvaccinated people but also the immunosuppressed or those who didn’t respond to the vaccine for other reasons, the millions of people who are still at extremely high risk of being ruined or killed by Covid even after vaccination.

With the current circumstances (the vaccine being so safe, the virus being so prevalent) not getting vaccinated is a choice that would personally make me feel like a shitty person, plain and simple. As I talked about above though I try not to really judge others for it, there are so many factors at play and we all make dumb choices not understanding the reach of their consequences. There are many people making the choice because they truly are bad human beings, but it’s no where near all of them.

Those who are most at risk (like my mother) realistically just need to protect themselves at this point and the foreseeable future, N95’s are widely available and testing in most areas is accessible, life won’t go back to ‘normal’ for a while if ever for them. My mother knows to get tested at the first signs of symptoms, and I sent her a link to the closest monclonal antibody site for if she does get a positive or is even exposed (they allow at-risk people with known exposures to be treated), it’s not ideal but it’s the best we got right now. Lots of people don’t have the resources to protect themselves though, they’re living or working in situations that leave them constantly exposed and they may not be able to afford a change. Again, I’d feel like a shitty human if I wasn’t taking an extremely small step to help protect those millions of people in our society. That’s not saying anything about anyone else, those who see a statement like that as a judgement or insult may want to consider why it makes them feel so defensive.

Yeah another reason why people shouldn’t be relying on treatments. With current infection rates we are quickly running out of supply

I’d like to say I’m surprised that people who are afraid of a small dose of an FDA approved vaccine used by hundreds of millions of people are more than willing to be hooked up to an infusion of non-FDA approved experimental lab made antibodies, but it only fits with the current state of things.

I think my state only has a few infusion sites, who knows what the availability is but probably not great. I haven’t looked much into the new rationing the White House announced but it definitely seems necessary right now. People like Joe Rogan do not need monoclonal antibodies, the FDA emergency use authorization even stated the treatment was to be reserved for those considered at-risk.

Yes. Canada has much lower rates. Canada has a much higher vaccination rate. I think Canada may be number one in the world for vaccinations, at least for a large country

We still do every single thing we can do to save the lives of unvaccinated people who get sick with COVID. Sometimes they die no matter what you try. And yes, they would still do so if we were using Ivermectin.

In just the same way that nurses who treat gunshot wounds resulting from criminal activity don't ask patients about the circumstances surrounding their injury (because they aren't relevant to the patient's treatment), nurses who treat COVID don't ask patients about their vaccination status (unless/until the patient is going to be successfully discharged, during their discharge education about how to avoid having to be hospitalized for the same shit again, which we do with everyone and every disease process).

I work side by side with the police in my unit because so many prison/gang members end up there for violent injury and they have to be watched 24/7 while hospitalized, but I assure you- I am not working with the police. I've never said so much as hello to them.

Florida has drive up regeneron clinics

You don’t need an iv infusion anymore. They do three subcutaneous injections, one in each arm and one in the stomach area.

Florida is not following the fda regulations for who is eligible. They seem to be giving it out to anyone who wants it, which is another reason the feds have had to step in

Dude-  your mentality is fucked. And selfish.

And also just straight up rude.

And you exhibit signs of being a sociopath.

You are clearly uneducated about how dangerous covid is and how easily it spreads.

You just shrug it off like " yeahhhhh, it's not that hard man"

And you should be ashamed for thinking you're better or know something more because you have kids and Asante doesn't. I mean honestly shame on you for that.

Knew of certain species but not feline.

Article says they treated with antibiotics.
Not separating them at this time.

I'd be curious to know if other animals in their group are infected. Or if they transmit to their handlers, which I understand is rare.

Here is the long and short of it: If have an MD, you can make a fucking shitload of money right now by selling your soul to Profit.

Being a doctor has always been potentially lucrative because when faced with extreme suffering and potential death, people become willing to sacrifice much more of their material possessions than they otherwise would.

It was a lot easier to just completely make shit up 200 years ago, give people some opium, and hope they survived. If the people felt better (which they usually did after using opium) and survived (which they may or may not have done, doctor or no doctor), they will attribute it to the doctor. The DOCTOR may even attribute the recovery to himself.

This kind of thing still happens in more complex ways.

But the science of medicine exists independent of medical practitioners. Outcomes from medical practices can be measured on a large scale. Medical practitioners can either choose to listen to or to ignore any given instance of "medical science" at their discretion- which may be either corrupted,  or just shitty.

What you call a high horse just me being upset that my 16 year old male with gunshot wound damage to his T1/T2 spine can't get surgery for days and lost whatever chance he had of not being paraplegic for life as a result of the fact that the operating rooms and doctors in public hospitals are so tied up

this by the way is the second person who has been in this precise situation in the last 3 weeks. Just among MY patients. other person wasn't quite as young but still quite a bit younger than me. Neither of them will ever walk on their own legs again.

It doesn't have to be this way, at least not in the USA. It didn't used to be, and it could go back to not being this way again. If the overwhelming majority of (still living) people are immunized at once, by vaccine or otherwise
