Tell me about living in richmond virginia
    #27188397 -

The only thing i remember about it is the mexican food was awful

Some stuff has come up though and I have to basically make a choice between staying in texas or moving to Virginia

Are there a lot of spanish speaking only people? A big part of how i sell myself to employers is being auper fluent in both languages which works to my advantage here for sure... if there are still plenty of spanish only people out there it could work even more to my advantage, assuming there are fewer second gen latinos, which i definitely seem to recall.

estimated 230,000 people live there. 6.3% are hispanic/latino.

It is a valuable skill there.

Maybe not a hire immediately selling point but a big plus for sure.

The Mexican food is still awful in comparison I'm sure but the restaurant biz has boomed the last 20 years. Lot more options than there used to be.

Mexican food is never good anywhere eastward past the middle of the USA. It stops being Mexican and becomes some bizarre interpretation of a mythical food thought to be inspired from some place supposedly called Mexico that nobody's ever  been to or seen

but it differs from place to place.

my city is like 45% hispanic or something so speaking spanish and english gives you a competitive advantage, but not a huge one, because probably 1 in 10 nurses here is English/Spanish bilingual. depending on the ratios over there the demand could be higher or lower

it's not only that, to be honest, I have developed an affinity for working with the hispanic community moreso than any other community.  the image I have of virginia is that it is a very "white" place, and even though I am very white, that sort of homogeneity makes me feel uncomfortable

haha i understand what you mean. i grew up outside of Pittsburgh PA and most communities are either white dominant or black dominant with a few mixed. very, very few hispanic or asian peoples.

i live out west now, CA for a few years and now im in NV, and i love the diversity. my wife was born in mexico

People that speak little english tend to live near people who understand them. By their design as much as the system's. Richmond is no different.

And as is typical businesses that serve low income areas tend to have higher demand for people who can speak spanish.

The middle eastern and Asian immigration has picked up alot in the belt to DC and Boston and NYC and all the big northeast cities and that includes Richmond

As you can imagine a place between the liberal north and conservative south it got hit a bit hard by the blm conflict and the yahoos on either side and it seems like that's gonna hit property value hard, on top of covid shit. I'd wait a bit and see before you decide to move. I expect there will be an exodus from cities.... Being locked in an apartment on main street sucks.

But that may mean more people immigrating from big northeast cities to Richmond.

Interesting times we live in...

I never really went out to eat or to the bar even before covid

would like to get back to some live music though

the scene here is good. diversity makes for badass music.

my entire family is moving to richmond. my sister and BiL, nieces, my parents... they all kinda want me to move too but...

I mean TBH she isnt the #1 thing tying me here, my affinity for working in this environment is, but it's a factor.

will your family close the door on you moving back with them?

if you enjoy your life in TX, then i think thats a good enough reason to stay.

you could move back to VA if things change in the future.

i mean it isnt like I would be living WITH them either way, just nearby.

they would love for me to come along but would not hold it against me if I stayed

Stay in Texas and visit VA. It'll give you and the mate an excuse to go out of state and stay rent free while you go to the beach! Plus you have great seafood where you are as well as VA, and you know tex mex is something you would miss. My mate is actually talking about retiring back in Texas now. He likes the taxes there and how it's a lot cheaper. He also doesn't want to be walking around on ice and snow when he's 70+. I'm with it too really. We can move to one of those nice neighborhoods now that I used to drive through when I was younger. The loose plan for now is keep the 11 acre property in the mountain with the cabin, sell our house in Denver, and buy one in FT/DFW. Do summers in CO, and then winter in Texas.
