If you didnt know, Stallmans started in the early 80's to make a fully functional free software OS (GNU), after having been burned by proprietary software

He finished everything except the kernel, GNU Hurd he was to ambitious with its design and ran into problems, its still not even finished today!(36 years later) but there only a minimalist team on it

luckily in 1992 Linus Torvalds re-released his kernel under the GPL making it free software, and people started plugging it into the hole that was the GNU system making a fully functioning operating system, that we refer to as Linux. Even today Linux is probably like 20% GNU components

Im pretty sad about all this, Stallman was one of my hero's, I went through a phase a few years ago, when I first heard of him and watched all his lectures on youtube,I think he has 3 main lectures, one promoting free software and criticizing proprietary software, one criticizing copy right and and piracy (he hates that term, he thinks equating sharing digital media to violently robbing a ship is propaganda) and promoting Copyleft, and one criticizing surveillance
