The only reason you cant use it to sterilise substrate(you dont sterilise spawn....twats) is if it cant handle the long runs.  Make sure it can cook at 15psi for 2 hours and then tell them to at least get there facts right when warning you.

Maybe you could use a camping stove if the canisters last long enough.

Nowhere in the manual does it say it can’t do two hours. The included recipes however only go up to 60 mins at 15psi, and 90 mins at 11psi. Should I be concerned? I’m using it to sterilize sawdust tonight for 2.5 hours.

Was it expensive?

Twice as expensive as my old Presto that warped after just a couple of uses on this stove.

Oh bollocks.  Id look at getting a different area to cook if you have the space.  Did you complain the presto?

This is out of my knowledge base so it might be better to wait for someone who has experienced this.

The manual of my new standard 23qt Presto doesn't mention this, so it must be specific to the induction model.
Could be that they don't recommend it for running long sterilization cycles since it wears out the bottom of the PC. The magnetic core in the bottom expands/contracts very quickly by a tiny amount under the influence of the magnetic field of the induction stove, which wears it out over time/destroys the aluminum/iron sandwich.
Avoid always using the highest heat/power mode on the stove to heat the PC and you should be fine for quite some time I guess

Interesting. I’m not actually using an induction stove, just a glass-top aka smooth-top stove. No magnets involved, so maybe I’m okay...

Yea my presto 23qt pc has ran 100+ cycles of grain over 4 years and the bottom is still flat. I always take 30 minutes or so of low heat(3) on my coil stove while I load the jars up and put foil on ect, then after I get my jars in and the lid on i turn the stove up to 6.5, and then back to 4.5 to complete the sterilization run. If you don't beat them up they will last a long time. They are a really great pc for the money. But i would be careful if it specifically says not to do grain cycles with it. It would be a terrible thing if your pc were to get damaged or possibly damage something/someone by using it other than directed.

:rofl2: sounds like they are just trying to dodge any potential relation to the illegal mushroom growing world

if its a pressure cooker than can do the necessary PSI, then that's really all there is to it

Can I use my 23qt Presto for sterilising sawdust blocks on a glass stovetop? I have an LPG burner I could use but would rather not use gas.

Yeah, my first thought was that this was a bullshit note to try to deter mushroom growers from using their products.  They're probably concerned that if their product shows up repeatedly as part of illicit mushroom grows it could be bad for public image...

Though if that is their motivation it comes at an odd time as legalization seems to be on the horizon.

Make sure that it seals properly

The last two pressure cookers I bought, one a mirro 23qt and the 2nd a t-fal 23qt both were defective right out of the box, neither one seal properly so I can't keep it at a steady 15psi..

Apparently presto's are better then the two other brands I mentioned...

All American is the cream of the crop for pressure cookers and they're gasket less so no more sealing issues or replacing the gasket.

Hope yours works for you OP. 400 bucks is a lot of loot to lose to defective products just to come on here and ask "why" and find out the seal is fucked.

Yea I agree, but they may have changed stuff as well, the alloys used may be slightly different or something of the sort. Im sure it would be fine but i would just be careful. It would be different if that not was printed on  the bottom of a sb but its a pc that could hurt someone if something catastrophic were to happen.

Its pretty funny really... unless there is something i'm missing which i'll grant is possible.

But just look at the wording - "not to be used for any aspect of mushroom growing" - seems they are specifically just making a statement that "we do not endorse the use of our products for illegal activities"

if its a pressure cooker, and it reaches at least 15psi, then it should be fine.

PCs only warp if they run dry, and that is user error.

Even warped, they still function. The components that make the seal are the main concerns in regard to danger - the gasket and release plug. As long as they are good, shouldn't be much concern. Unless user is doing things wrong and running the PC dry

Maybe their customer service has had a ton of idiots calling them about damaged PCs because they are using them wrong.... but it seems unlikely that these people would state they are trying to grow mushrooms

I'm not seeing how different alloys would have anything to do with mushroom growing specifically

If its unsafe to use for PCing jars at 90 min, then I sure as hell wouldn't be cooking food in it

Yea you are probably right, im sure its a public message they are trying to send. I think its funny, im looking at another presto and ill make sure to look at the manual to see all the things im not supposed to do with my pc lol.

If you change the composition of the metals used to make the piece of equipment, the pc, then it may have different tolerances to external factors such as heat, time of use, durability, ect. So if the pc wasn't designed to run @15psi for 2hrs plus then it could damage it. Im not saying that it would, but they just suggest against it.
