The correct term would be a semi-automatic rifle. Or a rifle.
Calling them assault rifles is factually inaccurate.
That’s something gun grabbing congressmen and senators call them to make them scarier.
A true assault rifle would be fully automatic, which is illegal.

Thats a smoke screen. An AR15 or AK47 with a full capacity mag chambering the same round as rhe military version, that merely has been made semi auto of course still is an assault rifle.
Modern military rifle, cartridge and magazine capacity isn't just "a rifle" in the sense a bolt action mosin nagant with its fixed low cap mag is "a rifle"
Select fire is BS.
If you want to clear out a classroom or diner you'd go semi auto and aim every shot anyway even if you had full auto capability.

The thing is these rifles are based directly off military assualt rifles. The shape, form and performance capabilites of these semi-auto rifles is very much similar to that of its military equilivent in semi-auto mode. Its not like a traditional hunting rifle. Its like calling a sports car a "car" since its an automatic transmission and not a manual transmission. They are both sports cars, just one has better sport-capabilties (the stick shift one). Sort of a reverse analogy but u get the idea.
Perhaps a more specific name is needed: Semi-Automatic Assault Style Rifle or SAAS Rifle for short

I assume your talking about the AR 15. It’s a rifle made to look like an M 16, but that means nothing. Still just a scary rifle.
