chicken of the woods?

I found these in my local park growing off the roots of a dead tree. They look a bit old but I got a few fresh bits. Just wanted to check before I try them. Thanks.

Looks like chicken of the woods to me, but (as you say) rather old and not appealing.

However, I'm in California, so we may have a different species here (your "loc" says you are in UK?).

Here's a video comparing chicken of the woods and a different polypore that you wouldn't want to eat. Your photos show tiny pores and a smooth, velvety underside, consistent with chicken of the woods.

You might be right, its bruised black so probably Meripilus giganteus.
