War! War! War! Let me get my tinfoil hat out for one second. America hit the tankers. This will drive up oil prices. America is the worlds #1 producer of oil, and does not rely on the straights of Hormuz. Could you imagine the profits from even a short gap in the supply? Even just threatening to close it could cause massive chaos and panic.

Obviously that is speculation, but it makes sense. That or we’re just looking for an excuse to take them out. Whose ready for more adventures in the Middle East?

Iran has nothing to gain by attacking anything. America has been looking for a reason to go into Iran for a long time now. If America takes out Iran they’ll have hegemonic control over the shipping lanes in the Middle East. Which they already sort of do due to the 5th fleet patrolling there.

With Iran gone though, even though I wouldn’t exactly call them good people, they still served as a sort of counterweight in the Middle East.

War with Iran would make Iraq and Afghanistan look simple and pleasant. You say "with Iran gone" -- beating Iran in a conventional military engagement would be a lot more difficult than you think.

I would call Persians very good people. I've known several.

War with Iran is not a new idea. My brother was in Iraq in 2006, he was in position were his unit would probably be the first to go in. They trained for it but the plug got pulled before it happened. Being 22 trillion dollars in debt, I can’t imagine we can pull off a large scale campaign again similar to Afghanistan or Iraq. But the establishment loves war. Mo war, mo money.

The way I look at it, politics in the US is like pro wrestling. You will always have the “hero” or the “heel”, but at the end of the day, the match was fake, they both got paid and they are back stage shaking each other’s hand and proud of the good show they put on for the masses.

I am still of the opinion that war with Iran would cease to be conventional within two years. They have the tech, and NK is selling ICBMs.

Yeah It was the first thing that crossed my mind but I'm on the fence till more details are released.
I wouldn't be surprised if the U.S. hands are in it to say the least.

The first thing I did was fill up my tank on my winter beater and my extra gas cans for mowing n shit encase we get hit with more of that trickle down effect. :lmafo:

I think those pics are the same ship from different sides. Looks like the naptha tanker.

I wonder if there's an SSBN floating around there somewhere? Iran only has diesel electrics, and their most advanced are three old Soviet kilo classes. I think that's the only Iranian sub that can do both mines and torpedoes. Of course, they have no WMD capability, and apparently someone already floated the idea that whatever did this does...

I also find it interesting that the US has released video already. Don't we have a carrier/bomber group floating around in there somewhere? That's definitely gonna be covered by multiple overlapping sonar patrols, a US carrier would be both a sitting duck and one hell of a prize for anybody in the world without an escort. Which makes it very interesting that they didn't discover the torpedo before the impact. Those are generally loud, and if they have any sort of homing capability, which seems to be required considering they haven't found three or four washed up somewhere nearby, that's active sonar, which would be immediately picked up by any military vessel in the area.

I'm thinking the Tonkin Ghosts just struck again.

It's not really clear if they're removing a mine or not. If they are, it could be a dud.

I think planting a limpet above the waterline is just kinda fundamentally stupid. Some dude goes out on a smoke break, looks down, and shits a brick. They don't exactly look like barmacles. And if they did, I'd still shit a brick from a barnacle that size. Plus it would be visible to anybody nearby, and would have to be placed there by a (much more visible) boat instead of a diver, and Iran has midget delivery subs for divers. Clearly they aren't too worried about the possibility of blocking the passage, if they used a torpedo on the other one. It just seems not very smart to put a show hole in one above the waterline, and a danger hole on the other below the waterline. Feel like that's an all or nothing type moment. Especially so visibly.

Plus, why would Iran target Japanese shipping, when they aren't on bad terms? Wouldn't it make more sense to fuck with US shipping? And have it be, ya know, consistently problematic with below the waterline hits?

Something doesn't add up. Especially the torpedo. I really doubt they busted out the old 1939-era steam/electric torpedoes and just lined up such a perfect shot. But even those would show up on sonar, they just wouldn't make themselves known quite as much as a guided torpedo. Maybe every sonar operator on every US ship in the vicinity simultaneously had to take a shit?

Good points about the targeting of Japan. Its also curious that Japan's Leader just met with Iran's Leader this month. How coincidental.

Perhaps the US military was purposely ignoring any enemy ships in the area to "stir some shit up".
