the actual geography of the world is confusing * 1
    #26029638 -

If you compare the actual size of the continents and countries, the map of the world is really inaccurate. Everything at the top of the mapnis blown up.  I'm currently in the gulf of Alaska and every time I look at a map, I see the states fairly level, but other maps its angled way upwards and looks funny.  I also found out that the Continental US is almost the exact same size of Australia and Russia, as bug as it is, is not as big as it appears to be on a map.  In fact, everything is pretty unproportional to eachother as whats represented on a map.  I wonder what kind of crazy world we actually live in and what it actually looks like. Guys know what I'm talking bout?

The Mercator projection is actually right. The earth is flat.

Yeah, the proportions of certain globals/maps are pretty weird. They just dont look right sometimes!

Try comparing the actual size of Africa and Greenland.

You’re gonna need to get about 20,000 miles up to do that

If you fly from Marakech, Morocco to Nuuk, Greenland, Africa-greenland is only 4700km = 2900 miles.

So, there. Distortion much?

I'm still trying to figure out why our troop transport flights to Viet Nam went over Alaska.

It's faster to fly at an arc than it is to fly a straight path from a-b:shrug:

But Alaska is a huge arc!

Do u mean an arc thru vertical altitude gaining? Or a latitude arc? Cause a latitude arc sounds like a lot longer flight.

It only seems like a longer path because you are naturally envisioning
it on a flat surface and not a 3 dimensional sphere. On a sphere the
path parallel to the equator is the longest path. Fly at a curve and th
path length decreases

:whathesaid: indeed i was holding a clay and made a sphere imagining it. The edge are less of diameter than traveling from the midcenter(bigger diameter).

No. I mean if you want to be able to see the actual entirety of Greenland and Africa to compare them you’d have to get pretty far above the earth

USA/North America is traditionally enlarged on maps for propaganda purposes. No kidding. I think I read it in a Robert D. Kaplan book.

The surface of the earth is not three dimensional, is simply a curved two dimensional surface, and the shortest distance on that surface is still a straight line. It is curved in 3 dimensional space, but straight in two dimensions. The technical term for this is a geodesic. Think about walking or flying along the surface of the earth without turning at all - your motion is 100% straight ahead. That path would be the great circle.

Stable orbits of satellites are geodesics as well. Satellites do not turn. They simply fly straight ahead according to the law of inertia. From the Newtonian perspective, gravity causes the satellite to curve around the earth in a continuous repeating loop.

The satellite is flying in a great circle.

That path projected onto a Mercator map looks like this and is actually takes the shape of a sine wave (the gap in the path is due to the rotation of the earth under the orbiting satellite. Doesn’t apply to earth bound objects)

As for flying along the equator, if your starting point and ending point  are on the equator then the equator is the shortest path. There is a special case of getting to the opposite side of the earth - Any straight path will be the same. Any starting direction will work.

Geodesics can be crazy. For example this is the shortest distance between Boston and Perth Australia. It strains intuition that you would almost go over the  North Pole to get to Australia.
