I don’t have patience for that. I’d be down for a one on one tutoring sesh and maybe we could compare continent sizes.

I bet you could teach him when twelve inches is not a foot. :smirk:

Just something for thought, where I'm at its still daylight at midnight. Right now its going on 1 in the morning and its still twilight. Something about being close to the north pole and the earth's tilt on its axis. Way different than the lower 48. Its pretty cool

Also airlines traveling long distances over remote areas and water often don't follow the shortest path. Rather they follow a slightly safer path

Like, ain't nobody flying over India/Pakistan right now.

They also route based on the best winds. When I fly Seattle - Bangkok it takes about 12 hours to go to Taipei to change planes. The route follows the Aleutian Islands, down over Kamchatka and Japan to TPE. Coming back it's only about 10 hours and they fly well south of the great circle route to pick up the jet stream. Adds about 100+ MPH to the ground speed so it's faster even though it's longer. Free speed.

Earlier this year a 787 broke the sound barrier relative to ground speed because of a nearly 300 mph jet stream

That probably happens all the time. A 777 cruise speed is 560 knots. Speed of sound is 660kt so all you need is a 100 knot tail wind.

It’s sort of a stupid comparison tho since the sound barrier only cares about airspeed. Ground speed is irrelevant.

Ground speed is extremely variable. I once flew in a single engine Cessna from Burlington Vermont to just outside Washington DC in about 2 1/2 hours. We had a massive tailwind and had ground speeds over 200 mph

I was measuring distance from my current position to different positions in Alaska and Russia and the line actually curves too as you drag it across Alaska. My current position 59°22'59.0"N 178°06'32.0"W

At the equator every day has 12 hours of daylight through out the year

It's really not a stupid comparison when you're traveling between two ground based points. But im sure the people that got to London over an hour quicker think its a dumb comparison too

Tail winds are rare over 80mph.

Close, but not quite. The sun moves from 23.5 degrees north at the June  solstice to 23.5 degrees south at the December solstice. So even at the equator the day length varies by a couple of minutes. But what's weird is that it's always longer than 12 hours, but, again, only by a few minutes.

Very cool. I was up in Fairbanks, Alsaka a while back and that light-all-the-time stuff really messed me up!

Because the sun isn’t a single point source of light

Nah, it's a disk, not a point. So the lower limb sets first and a few minutes later the upper limb sets but by the time you see it set it's already well below the horizon but you can still see it because of atmospheric refraction. Fuckin' math.
