VR head sets * 1
    #25998173 - 05/17/19 03:13 PM (4 years, 10 months ago)

There's this oculus quest VR thing releasing on may 21st. It doesn't require a PC which I don't have one powerful enough for the PC powered. The Oculus Quest is like a stand alone VR consol on your head, it's 400 bucks and I'm tempted to impulse buy it, but worried its going to actually suck and ill end up returning it or letting it collect dust, and then I bet theyll release a better one 3 months later. Anyone expert on this VR stuff? I used an older HTC Vive VR once and it was alright, pretty cool,  kinda pixilated and grainy but still pretty wild.

I would wait for reviews and see if it is worth the price

If you're going to buy a VR headset I highly recommend Oculus - they have a great library of games compared to the other ones.
And it's really good, it feels like you're in a different space. (No, seriously)

Btw, took some shrooms, played some VR games.. Didn't give me many visuals, I don't get visuals on TV screens either. So that's probably why.
Recommend taking psychedelics outside of VR cause it's a lot more effective outside it so far it seems.
But on it's own VR is totally amazing.

If you have the PC power get the rift s.. if you don't - then enjoy the quest, it's gonna be so much fun ;D

Cya in VRChat or smth.

If you don't game, is there any reason to get one, besides porn?

I'm interested in one, but don't think I have a reason to buy one since I don't game.

I don't play video games ever but thought it could be cool for Google Earth or desktop programming interface, or movies or .. porn

You'll 'lose' $40 at most, if you choose to resell.

These things hold value whilst they are new.

It's always worth bearing this in mind, since you can basically pay for a few weeks 'rental' of the item.  People commonly do this with expensive watches, much to the dismay of serious sellers.

The Games I play on the Oculus Go are very simple, but every time I pick it up, I wish I had of played sooner.  High speed / movement games sadly do cause significant motion sickness, but that's due to the fact that the body actually isn't moving on the Oculus Go.  The Quest tracks movement, so there's less 'confusion'.

My Quest is being delivered on Tuesday and the plan is to sell the Oculus Go for £150.  I should ideally have sold it before the Quest was released, but I want to judge both whilst owning them before making a decision.

It looks like the valve index is going to majorly up the ante of quality of sets - though its pre'damn pricey atm

I would be skeptical of the versatility of an all in one - though that size of a package can do some crazy things nowadays, it certainly still isn't going to be capable of the same kind of experiences a headset attached to a stronk PC is

Headsets attached to computers are likely to always dominate.

With regards to the all-in-ones; the fact that a person can roam around in any room, or use whilst travelling is a compromise which just can't be overlooked, which is why they have gained popularity.

We have to bear in mind too, that although people will always seek quality and immersiveness, some people won't be seeking elongated games with a huge expanse.

just gonna buy it on Amazon and return it if it bruises my brain and makes it bleed out my eyes. Amazon has a 30 day return policy. I read the quest got good picture quality quote "way better than Go" end quote, and I don't even really care about the video games

I don't have a sick computer, and not about to invest in one , so quest is my only option at this VR attempt

Mine is due from Amazon and intend to do the same.

There's only a difference around 440 pixels total in the res, but apparently it shines with OLED and subpixels, which makes that number irrelevant.

I imagine within 10 yearsish, seeing as the actual intensiveness of games hasn't increased much lately relative to the increasing power of miniaturized devices - that a self-contained headset would be able to do most anything. We're just not quiiiite there yet imo.

A self-contained device is great for a lot of other less intensive applications than full-on high-quality, high framerate on the spot game renders - any prebaked apps are great for that sort of device

The only real reason to get a VR headset if you don't game is if you do 3D modeling/design. I use it myself for designing real silver jewelry like rings and stuff. Cause it's easier to draw in 3D in VR than on a television screen.

Im gonna use it for making money somehow. It'll pay for itself in a matter of weeks! Idk what I'll do with it though tbh, I ordered it, so it better be decent or I'm gonna write oculus a mean n nasty email. I saw some reviews of the Podcaster who get it before launch and they say the picture quality is on par with vive-pro

Yeah, it's certainly possible.

Whilst I haven't been involved in PC games for years now, from what little I've seen, I haven't seen any remarkable leaps in technology.

Perhaps the VR itself is that technology and all other interests and explorations have been pushed aside.

I think you will really enjoy it honestly, OP.

Also, you're -going- to get reverse motion sickness. You're going to get seasick, but it will pass you get used to it within days. Your brain has to adjust to situations where you don't move but your visual information does move. But luckily the brain is adaptive and given some time the problem completely disappears. It's quite realistic, tricks your brain. There are however apps that give very little motion sickness and it's recommended to use those before zooming through google earth at lightspeed. Once you get used to it however, you can do that without motion sickness on google earth... Once you get your VR legs.

I ended up returning it, and already got refunded the money. It was unfortunate for me, too much strain on my eyes, especially since my eyes must be so close together because the adjustable eye thing didn't have enough adjusting room to accommodate proper focus. It was like looking through binoculars that don't line up with each eye. It was blurry and shimmery for me in a painful way. I sorta knew that'd be the case. Oh well, im glad to be relieved of the mystery about it

Yeah I saw a 3D movie once, it was avatar, it was really bad for my eyes, may have actually done damage due to 2.5 hours of extreme strain. My eyes have always been pretty sensitive. I don't wear glasses, my vision is really sharp most of the time, but sensitive to computer and TV screens. Even my phone screen fucks with my eyes. I'm better off without visual display technology
