I found this handful of morels while searching for some early ovoids in western PA
Just wondering what kind they are and if they are safe to eat raw, I was also thinking about making some risotto lol

I can't tell the species I'm afraid, but definitely some nice looking morels.

Fry them up, risotto sounds like a good option.

How do you actually tell them apart? Just curious, since Pennsylvania appears to have a plethora of Morhella species.

My impression is that ultimately you'll need at least a DNA sequence to be relatively sure.

As far as I know you would need microscopy to separate those two species. Morchella rufobrunnea might also be a possibility if they bruise orangish to rusty or reddish brown, but I think that's more of a west coast species and I'm not sure if they occur in PA.

Edit: If it is Morchella rufobrunnea, it seems it would be a rare find.

Morchella cryptica is now known as Morchella ulmaria, and it's very rare.  This is almost certainly M. esculentoides as it is 15 to 20 times more common.

Genbank has 3 sequences of M. ulmaria and 55 sequences of M. esculentoides.
