They weren't easy to dig being at various depths up to 10 inches so I planted a row in in some humus soil with the intent of having them available in the ground all winter.

Random things going on around the garden/yard.....


I've got some melon seeds germinated. They're left over seed from last year and don't seem to be as viable, but I've got 4 out of 10 popped open and growing so far. I planted some more yesterday. I'd like to have at least 6 melon plants of each variety.

The two varieties are "Ogen", an heirloom from Israel (green flesh variety)....and "Charentais", a French heirloom (orange flesh, similar to cantaloupe but richer/sweeter better).

I also plan on planting some "Lemon Drop" melons a bit later in the summer, once I find them in season at the store so I can get some seed...This isn't an heirloom variety, it's a Galia melon hybrid...Damn tasty tho...A super sweet-tart honeydew :drooling: .


I fucking loooove melons :lol: , I'll eat an entire melon to my dome during the summer time lol.

I'll be planting some water melon seeds next week...Orangeglo and Alibaba.




Some of the poppy seeds I sowed a bit over a month ago are now seedlings/small plants and starting to grow quickly. I was gifted some other poppy seed from a kind fella from this place, sowed them just a few days ago and they're already germinating & growing very quickly.

I've had some pepper seeds in moist paper towels for over a week now trying to get them to pop open, sitting out in the warmth of the sun during the day time, and none of them have popped open yet...three different varieties....I know pepper seeds can be finicky and take a while tho.

I saved some seed from a big chunky sweet bell pepper I ate the other day, I'm going to try to grow some of those. It was the best damn bell pepper I've ever had lol, would be nice to have a supply of those through the late summer/fall lol.

I'm thinking about germinating my cannabis seed sometime late next week but I might hold off for another week or two.




I have lots of edible/useful "weeds" growing around my yard, instead of mowing them down I've let them grow thick around the edges of my yard...Lots of stinging nettles, mallow, cleavers, chickweed, etc...I've been using the stinging nettles to make some strong stinging nettle tea/infusions, been drinking a cup of that daily for the past few days. The stuff is loaded with goodness (vitamin A, B vitamins..B-1, B-2, B-3, and B-5...vitamin C, amino acids, calcium, fatty acids, folic acid, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and potassium)...It's a nice spring tonic of sorts...Good for the adrenals, provides a good "flush" to the system while also providing lots of minerals/nutrition. Doesn't taste great, but not terrible. Straight up tastes like hay/grass/oats.

I also plan on using a lot of these stinging nettles and other "weeds" around my yard as fertilizer for my weed-plants and around the garden in general (in the form of fermented/botanical tea...and as compost/top dress). Nettles have lots to offer to soil/plants.


I picked some of the last oranges of the season off my orange tree this week :sad: ...I've been eating 2 to 3 oranges off that tree every single day since November and never got tired of them lol, I look forward to eating them every day and I'm going to miss them after I eat the last of them.

That orange tree is in bloom right now...and awwww man does my backyard smell divine. For me, orange blossom is one of the most intoxicating aromas/essences ever, and a top favorite of mine . I've been wanting to "capture" that essence the past few years and I'm going to try to do that this time around...I'm going to attempt to make some orange blossom hydrosol, and orange blossom enfleurage (using coconut oil)...because I want to smell that smell more than just a few days a year lol.

I'm interested to see how they grow for ya.

I'm not too savvy when it comes to genetics lol...but I've heard when growing from seed that they'll sometimes grow into trees that produce fruit that don't taste that great or have other unwanted qualities like lots of seeds, but on the flip side when growing from seed you can also end up with a tree that produces a super tasty/unique tasting cherimoya.

Because all cherimoya that are found in stores come from clones of specific varieties (like many fruits on the market).

Yeah, it's a kit from a Danish company called Juliana. Specs are at: https://en.juliana.com/juliana-gardener/p/64033/99433 It's their Gartner 18.8 model. Nice, heavy-duty profiles and extrusions. Pretty easy to put together once you figure out that the instructions suck. Even with the shipping it was thousands cheaper than similar American and Canadian models.

Any of you guys ever planted an entire garden, as in enough to not buy produce from a store using just pots and buckets?

I did it a few years back with halfway decent results, but I'd like to hear of any successful portable garden stories if you guys have any.

:kittylaugh: dude I feel like I'm stalking you now, but im giving it a go this year. I've chillies tomatoes and peppers going atm. I've got seeds for carrots, radish, parsnips and lettuce, and I'll be doing a couple of tubs of potatoes. All likely to be in big planters or pots.

Don't think I'll have enough that I'll not need to go to the shops but hopefully will do me for a good while if the slugs don't get to them 1st.

That's awesome man.
When I did it, it was because it was the first place I rented when I moved out West, and they wouldn't allow me to build a little raised bed.

I ended up going with 8 5 gallon buckets and 10 large terracotta pots. But I made the mistake of getting super excited about living in a different growing zone, that I ended up planting 12 different crops. Many of which I had never grown before.

A couple root veggies, tomatoes, and peppers did fine (although a lot slower growth than I'd like to have seen) but the super low humidity here made it hard for leafy herbs like basil. Rosemary was the only herb that did alright as in producing enough to be worth my time. And that was surprising to me as in FL I always had a hard time keeping rosemary going through the year.

That all changed when I put my greenhouse up, and I was able to grow what I wanted with good results. But this year it's back to a bucket garden as I'm moving around a bit. I think I'm just gonna go with the crops I know grow well here. I do want to try to grow corn again however. I produced 2 ears the size of...my actual ears last time lol.

I finally ordered the poppy seeds for this year.  I usually have them in the ground around now, gonna have to wait til next week.  If anyone is interested, they’re called ‘Black Swan’, and look like this:

They’re P somniferum, so I assume that they’re drug flowers, but idk anything about their alkaloid content.  I grow poppies every year but don’t cut them for opium.  I do harvest and dry the pods, but I just kinda keep them, lol.  Still have the pods from the last two seasons.  It’s a very small patch, and makes very few pods.  So it’s all mostly decorative.

Right on. They're beautiful plants regardless of alkaloid content (and I can't really fuck around with that anyways). I've always wanted to grow some poppies for decoration though, I would just have to have enough self control to not harvest the pods. Maybe I'll make that the wild card this Summer. I've been seeing pictures left and right of the poppy fields coming up in Cali this year due to the extensive snowpack, and it's just gorgeous.

Just grow some non-somniferum poppies. There's lots of really nice looking ones with none of the "Gee, really officer. I didn't know that." risk.

I thought of that immediately after making that last post and felt like an idiot. lol

But then I thought about the self control/will-power aspect of it, and it could be a good exercise for me psychologically.

I thought it was legal to grow P somniferum as long as you're not harvesting its latex or processing them in any way to extract alkaloids. Not that there's any law enforcement of what I grow where I live, but yea, if it's illegal I wouldn't take the risk simply for a decoration and possibly a silly psychological exercise.

My poppies and carrots didnt sprout. Idk if I got cold enough. I'll try again by statifying them in the fridge.

Got some purple asparagus rhizomes today.

I’ve read that you need a cold snap to sprout poppy seeds, but I always sow mine in late April, when it’s pretty warm.  Never had a problem getting them to germinate.  Maybe it’s something that helps, but isn’t necessary?  Hope you get them going eventually.

Thanks. I think I saw a few sprouts but they kinda got washed around. I'll probably be planting around them.
I havent properly weeded the bed either so ill do that and then sow again.

When do you get flowers?

I was really looking forward to those black peonies.

My poppies didn't take either. I started a few in a pot and they are doing good. Must have planted +1,000 in planters and thrown into grass. None so far, and last year by this time they were already flowering.

I plant around 4/20 usually, and will just start getting flowers around the 4th of July, so I guess it takes about 2.5 months to go from seed to flower.  They’ll be in full bloom like a week or two after the first early flowers show up.

You live in a warmer climate than I do, but not drastically so.  But they like to grow when it’s hot and sunny, so you may be a bit better suited to it when they do sprout.  Protect the little guys; when they first sprout, they’re hella delicate and could get cooked by too much sun.  In the first couple weeks, I water them at least once a day, sometimes more.  When they start getting lettuce-y they’re much more resilient and can take a full sun pounding better than most plants I grow.  If you can get them to germinate and get them out of that wee seedling stage, it’s pretty much smooth sailing from there (unless you get too much rain, haha).
