I was on an insane piece of property in California along the coast and my landlord allowed me to take whatever I wanted (he lived next door and grew on a large terrace in front of both of our places). There were 7 of us living there. Great times, lovely communal living.

Cherimoya is by far one of my favorite "things" ever...I looooove cherimoya.

I'd like to grow it someday but I don't know how well they'd do where I live at the moment (central-northern-cali)...and it seems like a tree that would have to be in the ground to grow well & proper and since we don't own the property where I live right now I don't want to plant a tree here, especially since it'd likely take at least 5+ years before getting any fruit.

I dream of having land someday...so many things I want to grow.




But yea...cherimoya man!...So gosh darn good, to me it's like the epitome of "heavenly" & "divine" flavor lol...The first time I ate one I had the biggest smile on my face and wanted to dance it tasted so good lol.

IIRC you're out in the bay...I'm pretty sure they can grow out there. I know they're grown down around the Santa Barbara area, which I think is the only place they're grown domestically (as far as for selling the fruit on market)...It's probably prime climate down there, but the bay isn't much different...Where I live out in the valley I think it's just a wee bit too hot during the summer and just a wee bit too cold during the winter for them to thrive & grow well.




But yea, the fruit is delicious.

To me it smells almost like fruity pebbles cereal, or like a fruity cotton candy, it has a sweet melange going on of all sorts of fruity aromas.

They inner flesh is almost custard like....soft & creamy and juicy.


The taste..For me it's like a combination of every delicious fruit out there, in harmony & balance. Notes of pineapple, mango, coconut, banana, peach, honey, sometimes a little avocado in there....But I can't even really compare it to those other fruits/flavors because it's got it's own thing going on, it's a unique aroma/flavor but I do notice familiar fruity notes in there....and all those flavors are wrapped up in a soft note of vanilla-like sweetness that comes through at the end.

With that said...I'm really into fruits, and the subtleties in things...when I had my sisters and their friend try it, they weren't nearly as stoked on it as I was...All they had to say was "it sorta taste like mango" lol, but to me and my palate it is a divine & unique flavor and it drives me nuts it's so good. But perhaps not everyone gets as stoked about fruits and subtle aromas/flavors as I do lol.


I've tried a few different varieties/strains (not sure on the names of the varieties I've had, since I got em' from the store the variety wasn't labeled, but I have noticed some differences the few times I've had em'), or I've at least noticed some differences the few times I've had them over the years...Some were a little sweeter than others, some were richer in flavor than others, some had more of a distinct "vanilla-like" finish than others, some had a little more complexity than others, some had a little bit of an avocado flavor underneath, and some had more seeds than others (that's the only negative thing, the fruits contain large seeds which are kinda bitter and have to be spit out, and some cherimoya have more seed than others...and the flesh close to the peel is kinda gritty/bitter).

The very first time I tried a cherimoya was the best one I've ever had, the ones I've had since then have been good but not "perfect" like the first ones I had...I've started to see them in stores over the past few years, if your store has a "specialty/exotic/tropical" fruit area check it out...I sometimes see them randomly through the year, but I think spring time and fall is the time of year they're "in season".

They're not cheap, usually $5 to $8 for a single fruit (I just get em' as a dessert when I do see them)...and they do seem to have a short window of time when they're at ideal ripeness before starting to get mushy/rot, and before they're properly ripe their flavor is super bland...but if you find one that's perfect, man they are so damn good lol.

And no doubt a home grown cherimoya would be the best. I can only imagine how ridiculous a tree ripened cherimoya would be (because no doubt all the ones I've had were picked off the tree before properly ripe) . I feel this fruit would make some of the most fire ice-cream or sherbet ever lol.


I think the best way to grow Cherimoya is from cuttings/clones...because from seed you never know what you're going to get (as far as what the fruit is going to taste like).
