Yeah, it sucks. I like the opiates in them, but more than that I like to see them grow and enjoy looking at the pods in my backyard.

That is kind of my growing method though. I plant everything in high numbers and then mistreat them so that only the strong survive. I don't mean to do it, it just happens that way.

My blueberry bushes are back to life , they look a bit bigger every year

Rosemary is fun , they made it through a good amount of the winter , had snow on them , it was nice to have it fresh

This year I'll bring one in as a house plant

I've some Californian poppy seeds, I've been waiting to sow them because it's still real cold here (was as low as 2/3c earlier in the week) but its starting to warm up now. I think it's going to be around 15/16c for the next wee while so I'll keep a planter for them and maybe bring it indoors at night or something.

They'll look nice if they grow they're more orange/yellow than red from what I've seen in pictures.

Edit: just sown them there now in 2 smol planters.

I got sprouts! But it will take some meticulous and painstaking weeding to allow them to out compete.

Laurens grape, black peonies, and hens and chicks mixed together. I staggered the beds, poppies/carrots/poppies/carrots. Wish I kept them together, though it may allow more light. In a couple weeks I'll mulch with compost.

Jerusalem artichokes popping up. I need to move out some black berries and raspberries to make a pumpkin and melon bed.

Goji berry and comfrey cuttings on the way.

I sowed some "Black Swan" poppy seed last month. I saw the seeds at the grocery store for a dollar so grabbed em'. The seeds I had must have not been too viable but some did pop up, and at this point I have maybe 10 of them (out of hundreds of seeds) that are past the seedling stage and growing quickly.

I'm growing them mostly just for the beauty/aesthetic and to have some flowers and colors around the yard/garden, it's a bonus if they provide me with a few cups of pod-tea :grin: .

IIRC the black swan variety is mostly on the weak side but def still contains some alk.

This is my first time growing poppies (and carrots lol) and I too was wondering about that....


....from what I gather and from what I've seen so far though, I don't think they need to be exposed to a cold snap (but yea, it might help speed up and/or increase germ rates), but the seeds and seedlings are very tough when it comes to being exposed to cold/freezing temps. I planted some more poppy seed a bit over a week ago, it's been around 50 at night and 70+ during the days since then, and they sprouted within a few days.


I've sowed some more yesterday, it's supposed to be pretty warm over this next week (possibly up to 90 later this week for the first time of the season) so I'll report back on how they sprout of grow in this heat.

Anyone ever grown monkey face orchids? They look pretty cool and I'd like to try them but are orchids difficult to grow?

Nice! I planted some more peppers yesterday. Some kind of stripped bell peeper. They're from a bell pepper that had reddish orange and yellow stripes. I got a good anihiem pepper for a recipe and it was good so I planted those seeds too

Cool, I dont think I've ever had Anaheim before so looking forward to trying them. I think they might be good raw in a salad or a wrap or something.

I was going to see if I could grow apples so kept a core from a pink lady. I cut it open today to get the seeds out and they've already started sprouting inside the apple core :stayfunky:

Store bought apples are pollinated with crabapple pollen. The trees will likely be shit.

I got a bunch of aronia, elderberry, goji berry, and josta berries to take over the garden. Gunna get some more varieties and some perennial nitrogen fixers to put in there. Put a bunch of comfrey at the edge of some beds, need more of that too. Gunna put in some more sorrel and sea kale in soon. My poppies and tomatillo are getting huge quick. As well as some of the tomatoes. My lettuce bed is slowing down. Gonna let a few of them go to seed and replace the rest with perennial greens.

Looking for a nanking cherry right now.

Good point. It's a crap shoot what you'd get, since apples are grown from grafted trees and usually do not come true from seed as cross-pollination between apple varieties produces variable results. The seed inside of an apple has been thru sexual reproduction and is genetically different than it's parent. My understanding is peaches, nectarines, and apricots come true from seed. And often citrus will, but not always.

That's interesting, but since I've never grown any trees before (or much of anything tbh) I'm not too fussed. If they grow and make it through winter I'll be happy.
