Cactus I'd plz

Can some one plz tell me what kind of cactus this is. I don't know if I'm posting in right spot

It is actually not a cactus at all! It's an Euphorbia species. I'm not very good with them so can't tell you the exact species, but treat it and it's latex as potentially toxic.

I've a question for you. How are you able to tell the difference between Euphorbia plants and those in the Cereus genus?

Very easily, but I probably won't be able to explain it well. First and most obvious thing is the way Euphorbia branches out. It produces branches as it grows, from the tip. Cacti will always put out new shoots from the areoles. Next are the thorns on the Euphorbia, as opposed to spines that come out of areoles on cacti. Then there's the general texture of the skin and growth habit. And if you're still not sure, you just make a small cut in the skin of the plant, if it bleeds white latex, it's an Euphorbia.

As basic as it gets is this. One is a cactus and one is a succulent.

Cacti have areoles and succulents do not.
