spawn and substrate ratio
    #25857243 -

hey guys. just wondering if anyone has a golden ratio for spawn and substrate mixture. i'd like to hear any opinions anyone feels like chiming in with. while i'm on the subject, what happens if you're significantly off of that ratio? like if you only used 1 part spawn vs 10 parts substrate for instance?

reading through about 6 of them now has gotten me no closer to knowing what UTSF is

Are you growing in a tub and using coir?  I don't really think there is a golden ratio.  The more spawn you use the faster it will colonize which means mushrooms faster.  Also, you should theoretically get more yield.

The substrate depth is more important imo.  For cubes, at least 2.5 inches up to 4 inches.

thanks rickyswamps. it's refreshing to get  a real answer rather than a bunch of mushroom troll snobs trying to make fun of me for not knowing all of their acronyms.

sorry dude, but I'm not a snob. I just read the rules...

1.  Please use the search posts function before asking a question.  Your question has already been asked and answered hundreds of times, so don't think you're going to get a better answer by asking it again.  In the 'search posts' link at the top of the page, you can select an individual user or the trusted cultivator group as a whole to filter results to come only from them. more on how to use the search engine effectively

AND I answered your question...

adot, i've literally spent over an hour sifting through pointless garbage trying to track down what UTSF means. not a god damned step closer to understanding after all that. every single link with UTSF doesn't actually mention UTSF once. try searching it on here and see what you come up with. google was no help either.

ohhh. Use The Search Function... sigh. i specifically asked the question here to get a quick and new response, and so i didn't have to go down the rabbit hole of searching hundreds of outdated posts. so where did that lead me? down the same fucking rabbit hole trying to figure out what UTSF meant.

Yo man, so I came across this math formula that works for me.
L"xW"xHeight of substrate+spawn"
64qt tub is-
23.75"x16"x3"=1140
Take total and divide by 57.75 (magic number)
1140÷57.75=19.74
19.74÷3 or ÷4 (for 1:2-1:3 ratio)
1:2
Comes to 6.58qt (7) for your spawn, 13.16qt (13) for substrate.
1:3
Comes to 4.93 (5)qt for your spawn, 14.80 (15)qt for substrate
I usually round up or down depending on what I have to work with.

There's various filter and search techniques that will help you get better results. Also I've never heard of just UTSF. I have heard of UTFSE thuogh which is use the fucking search engine.

When I first joined here I had trouble using it too, but it's because I wasn't using it properly. You can filter by date, posts with pictures, posts specific to a user, posts only by trusted cultivators

Use main words don't be too specific

Also I have heard many times that a substrate that is too nutritious can cause some varieties to blob and not produce normal fruits/lots of mutants. Spawning 1:1 can apparently cause this. Not sure how true it is but I spawned 1:1 recently and have a shit load of mutants and weird pins forming

I totally agree with what shadow said. I hated the search engine until I finally figured out you can filter your search criteria. It makes the search function....function

Don’t sweat the grief, rookies get hazed in pretty much any group worth being in. And for what it’s worth, I had no idea what UTSF meant either.

1:3 is fairly typical but 1:1 is fast, but also doesn’t retain water very well.  I’m still trying to dial it in myself.  It depends on a lot of factors.  Start somewhere and use intuition to make adjustments.  So much of this hobby you just have to learn the hard way.  Good luck.

Also I recommend thicker skin around here.  Truth is everyone here is a decent human and very helpful but they do love to ruse the shit out of each other.  Nobody is immune save roger rabbit himself.  Each of us has been roasted a time or two.  I do dumb shit all the time and willingly make myself available for ridicule.  It’s a good way to learn if you don’t take it too personal.

Look at all you just learned here for example.
