OP I dont want to get morbid or anything but picture this (idk how old you guys are, but) say in 30 or 40 years when yous are both old and you time here is coming to an end. Your good lady passes away one night peacefully in her sleep and in the following weeks or months, you are sorting through all your belongings, you see a dull metal object in a bedside drawer and think wtf is that you put your hand in lift the cold metal object from where its sat for the last couple of decades and realise oh fuck it's that watch. You flip it over see the message on the back and remember what a lil bitch you were, giving off on the internet about the watch getting fucked up!!!! how your lovely partner took the time to write you a personal message that has lasted all those years. I guarantee itll bring a tear to your glass eye.

Who cares about a watch though really? A watch? That personal engraving would mean so much more to me than just paying somebody else to do it.

I don't wear watches, so I really couldn't care less about it. A personal engraving IS so much more than a store job...but she should've done some practice runs on some other surfaces. You guys are all being very knightly about this, and that's great...but i'd be bummed to get a nice smooth piece of metallic craftsmanship with dremel scratch all over one side. Initials would've been better.

All that being said, I'd leave it as is...and try to get over it. I'd never take it back to the place and get it "fixed". That'd be fucked up, and she'd probably cry and hate you for it.

That "S" though....
