Why in the F***

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary today.  She bought me a pocket watch from a local jeweler.  They didn’t engrave it like she asked.  So she comes home busts out my dremel tool and does this to it.

WTF!!! This poor watch.  I don’t understand why.  It was a nice watch.  Why jank it up



Take it back to be engraved later, such a waste

Seriously, great gesture either way.

If it really bothers you get it redone by a pro later, probably wouldn't be hard to touch it up and make it look smoother. Then it would still have the specialness of being hand done by your wife while looking nicer.

If that was found later in life, it'd have more meaning done the way it is now.  Perhaps that is some of why it hurts.

As far as metal detecting goes, that's my opinion.

I mean her intention was related to it being heart felt and meaningful.  I mean she busted out power tools and didn’t let any of it stop her from getting the job done.  Also having used a mechanical hand engraver in my trade- she could have fucked up worse.  Also the backs of pocket watches are easily replaced if you are that fussed over it.   

Maybe she wasn’t being the brightest bulb in the box but it sounds like that girl has heart.  If you forget the optics of the materialistic show quality- it’s quite sweet.

Although it's very sweet, and heartwarming, and I'd never tell her otherwise...but I'd be internally sour about that too, man. She really fucked that watch up. I'm sure she's just a doll though, and very sweet. :smile:

OP I dont want to get morbid or anything but picture this (idk how old you guys are, but) say in 30 or 40 years when yous are both old and you time here is coming to an end. Your good lady passes away one night peacefully in her sleep and in the following weeks or months, you are sorting through all your belongings, you see a dull metal object in a bedside drawer and think wtf is that :shrug: you put your hand in lift the cold metal object from where its sat for the last couple of decades and realise oh fuck it's that watch. You flip it over see the message on the back and remember what a lil bitch you were, giving off on the internet about the watch getting fucked up!!!! how your lovely partner took the time to write you a personal message that has lasted all those years. I guarantee itll bring a tear to your glass eye.

I like it as is and would leave it as is. It's a nice thing to do Hopefully your wife doesn't read Shroomery and find out that you're complaining about a free gift and insulting her.

If it was an $80,000 rolex, or whatever a good watch is, then I might question why she would do it herself. Got any pics of the front of the watch?

I'd still take that watch to the equivalent of a horse dentist.
If she asks, just say there was some flaky snaggy bits of metal that you had to get smoothed over.

But I can also see the appeal in keeping it as is, just for the funny story and the love that went into it

I don't wear watches, so I really couldn't care less about it. A personal engraving IS so much more than a store job...but she should've done some practice runs on some other surfaces. You guys are all being very knightly about this, and that's great...but i'd be bummed to get a nice smooth piece of metallic craftsmanship with dremel scratch all over one side. Initials would've been better.

All that being said, I'd leave it as is...and try to get over it. I'd never take it back to the place and get it "fixed". That'd be fucked up, and she'd probably cry and hate you for it.

I get OP was looking for something less home-y for his 15th.  15 is a big deal, and congratulations.  She related the quality of the gift to the thoughtfulness behind an engraving no matter how it got done, not just you having a watch to show off/be a material social status thing.  I don’t agree that the watch is now a waste. 

  You just need an out of the box problem solve if you are really fussed over it.  Maybe take a good quality photo of her engraving, frame it- have the back re engraved and have a sterling key fob or something matching engraved for her.  Put the frame on the bureau/somewhere proud and you’ll be able to spin the sentimental appreciation, return a classy smidge of the thoughtfulness and your watch will be up to your more glamorous standards.  Then potentially proceed with the sentiment Morel outlined above.  :lol:
