Oh yea you can still eat the fruits and use the prints.

It's been my experience that bacterial stuff doesn't have a smell the majority of the time.

How did you make your LC? It should always be tested on agar plates before you start spawn

ah well i do have some PDA agar powder so i can actually do that next time.

i start by printing my spores on foil under a glass jar inside my SAB then i will fold it up until ready to use, sometimes kept in a ziploc bag in the fridge (not sure if thats bad or not actually)

from there back into the SAB with a sterilized syringe (boiled water sucked into the syringe through the needle 5-6 times keeping the last one). i flame the needle to sterilize before it goes into the SAB to fill my little cup (alcohol washed) with water which i scrape the spores into with a little flame sterilized knife and i suck the spores into the syringe.

my liquid culture recipe is just 4% light corn syrup (some crystal clear brand, not karo) and it also has a tiny bit of vanilla in the ingredients it says.

i have a half pint jar with two injection ports (self healing from a store not homemade) with syringe airport with poly fill, i pressure cook the LC obviously, 60 minutes at 10 psi or something like that i cant remember (i admit i didnt actually follow a tek but kinda read multiple teks and made it work with what i had). came out clear no cloudyness or anything. inject my spores like i do a pf jar, about half cc maybe 1 cc per half pint jar. 3 days later they have germinated and within a week or two there is a nice cloud of mycelium that i suck up into a syringe that i use to inoculate grain jars with.

i have no more spore prints and 10CC of my homemade LC left so i think ill get right on an agar tek for that last syringe.

wouldnt it smell bad? it smells pretty much the same as the brf cakes. the surface is also dry?

im not disputing your claim just trynig to better understand.

even so, this was meant to be a testing tray for the liquid culture (i didnt label it or anything but im pretty sure its 1:1 spawn to sub) so im not upset about this tray.

maybe i wont consume the fruits but would they be ok to collect spore from for the next round of syringes?

not always. depends on the type of bacteria and how present they are.

ok so its been about a week since i put the tub into fruiting conditions and i have a fairly decent (in my opinion for my first whack at it) pinset going. the strain is koh samui super strain and the fruits were pretty dense on the cakes and ive heard it does better on bulk subs so im hoping to get a couple decent sides ones i can take tissue samples from for cloning perhaps.

its small but im happy with what im getting, i can count at least 20+ fruits that are already formed plus several more looks to be coming soon maybe. everything is so different from pf tek lol. the other tray doesnt look any better or any worse than before, pins are still developing so we shall see what it does.

heres a photo of what i have going now. i guess ill share a final shot when they are all mature!

thanks everyone for all the advice i will definitely put it all to use on the next round.

what should i do about the sub and liner pulling away from the sides of the tub? its obviously shrinking due to water loss (probably normal because of all the fruits using the water?)

i guess ill have to let it finish flushing before i attempt to rehydrate (if it even makes it that far) and when/if i get that far what is the best way to go about it?

there is some discoloration on the sub surface i think metabolite or bacteria, i think it is stressed out a little bit because to be honest i cant stop fucking with it because this is my first experience with this and i want to see it at all stages so its hard for me to just walk away and let it do its thing. next time will be easier, i hope this one makes it to the end.

the little tray thing has what seems like hundreds of pins emerging from all sides in a sort of fairy ring around almost around the whole tray lol. im planning on printing and taking a tissue sample of the large cluster

If I were you, Id take the sub out and fruit it as one giant cake in a humidity chamber.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/25339094/fpart/all/vc/1

Most of your yield is going to come from the side pins and if you want to maximize that yield, they need more space to flourish in.

i wasnt sure if i could follow the same rules as brf cakes for fruiting my tray as a cake, now that i now i can im going to "birth" the tray and fruit it as a cake.

here is my other tray. wasnt sure it was gonna make it, still not 100% sure but now it is actually doing something. you are probably spot on about needing the space to flourish. i didnt realize how crammed in they were from looking at it in the tray. it was kinda tough to birth the tray without causing some damage.

Tub and tray have been harvested. Unfortunately I didnt get any cool pics. What I did get was about 540 grams wet between the two with a handful of slow pokes on either one.

Big meaty Koh Samui fruits and from my homemade multispore syringe I can clearly see at least 3 VERY distinct genetic profiles that are very clearly different! Two cluster phenos (both of which i printed and took a tissue sample from one), one has a nippled cap and stained so dark it was practically black!

I have 3 test agar jars going right now but Im unsure of my tek and cleanliness so just in case I purchased some sterile prepours from amazon.

3 qt jars of rye already colonizing so i have a head start on my next tub.

I gave both the tub and the tray a VERY good misting as they were both feeling dry.

Probably wont update this thread any longer but I might take a photo of all my dried fruits tomorrow for one last update.

I have to thank everyone here for any help I have received as I know this wouldnt be possible without this forum so thank you all.

Out of curiousity though should I be using a knife to harvest my fruits? They seem pretty deeply rooted and the first cluster tore up a sizable section of substrate probably ruining any chances i had at a second flush.

Yeah harvesting the pins destroys the substrate. Ive gotten multiple flushes but thats when I twisted the mushrooms off one by one VERY slowly and gently. Minimizing the amount of coir pulled away. I haven't tried using a knife or scissors. Perhaps you can try that and let us know how it goes!

I didnt get a full shot of the entire harvest since it came i sections and nothing matured at the same rate lol.

these are from the fastest growing cluster which provided the nicest and largest fruits as well. im attempted to clone tissue on agar and ive taken a few spore prints of the nicest looking and fastest growing fruits.

I hope the dark bruising when I cut the cap means these have a good potency. I havent tried them yet but Im super excited to.

If you are making LC from spores, that's where you are getting your contaminates.  You have to clean up spores by germing them on agar and making transfers until you have a clean culture.  At that point you can drop a wedge in your LC, or do a tiger drop if you're using pasty plates.

Spores are inherently dirty, no matter what procedure you take.

yes i am making my LC from spores. so i guess that answers that. i already have a head start on agar plates.. i made some with my pda but im not sure my tek was effective or not so just in case i ordered 10 malt agar prepours from amazon and will be here friday and at least my LC agar will be definitely be ready by then. the spore and tissue sample jars are growing but much slower but might be ready for a transfer in a few days. hope this all turns out as good as everything else has, this is a fun hobby lol.

I encourage you to make a shoebox and right when its ready for fruiting, flip it over into a humidity chamber .Fruit is as a giant cake as before.  It won't do any damage if you add it before it even starts pinning. Make sure its upside down. You will get much more pins, and healthier ones too.

May the force be with you

i wasnt sure id get a second flush but im surprised to find that the substrate has pretty much for the most part healed itself, or at least in the process of healing itself.

looks pretty rough.... yellow metabolites? bacteria? ripped up substrate, spores have dropped on it and she has shrunken quite a lot. i have been misting it pretty heavily trying to simulate rain and leaving the top open to dry it out and resoaking to get as much moisture back in but i have a pin set coming in so i think i will stop and maintain humidity and fae.

the little tray thing, that thing is flushing again and and i put another tray (this one is just coir and verm no hpoo) in and that is starting to make fruits as well.

i really dont think ill get a third flush out of these lol. ill probably quarantine the weird little tray so it doesnt green out and infect the other one lol. i have 3 quarts of spawn ready to go and more supplies coming after the weekend
