Is this substrate colonized enough to fruit?

its been 11 days since i spawned, i used i think 3 jars of rye spawn and im not sure of the exact recipe i just kinda eyeballed some things but probably like 75% horse poo 20% vermiculite (fine grade i think) and 5% gypsum powder and just a pinch of pickle lime and i brought that mixture to field capacity and i did the bucket method and later read that it was not really a true pasteurization so i hope it is all ok but if not oh well.

here is a picture im not exactly sure what size this tub is andits my first time working with a PC, first time working with rye and liquid cultures the only thing i ever did before was brf cakes which i had decent success with.

anyways, is this tub ready for fruiting?




i have it in my closet away from the light right now. thanks for the help

I've read and keep hearing that its fine to fruit from the beginning.  So this is definitely ready.

Years ago I used to tape up the holes and wait until it looked fully colonized before putting poly in.

No need to do that. I put the poly in when I spawn my tubs (I use micropore now, but same deal).

Question:

I have what I believe to be some bacterial growth on my substrate. they are clear/opaque/amberish yellowish globules on the surface of the sub. they look like small water droplets (not much bigger than a pen tip).

ive put a "casing" layer of wax paper (actually parchment paper) to help bring more pins (it was already pinning a little bit, i could clearly see about 10 fruits forming), should i keep fanning and doing FAE cycles with the wax paper over the substrate or just let the c02 build up while it pins, then bring up FAE?

question 2, i have a try i was trying to fruit and im experiencing what i believe it called mycelium overlay? i didnt put a casing layer on this tray and was planning to fruit as is and now there is a thick layer of mycelium, it turns slightly yellowish when its sprayed with water and returns to a thick white mycelium network. should i crumble that tray and re pack it and fruit it before its fully colonized or do you think the wax paper will be enough to get this tray to fruit? ill post pics later in a bit...

im still really new to all this so im trying to figure out as much as i can without having to ask for help but i think im stuck now lol. appreciate any help.  (aside from the bacterial growth the monotub is doing great i think im mostly just concerned about the tray)

I stuff holes with poly when I spawn my tubs and put the tubs directly to racks with lights. You'll know it's ready to fruit when it starts fruiting. They should need minimal to 0 misting before 1st flush. With holes properly stuffed there is no reason to fan the tubs. I use small fans in the room to help move air around.

I never use wax or parchment paper to act as a casing. I see no need for it. If your sub is drying out too quick then your holes aren't stuffed tight enough. I feel the wax paper will just hurt more then help if you take the proper steps to correct environmental conditions.

That top tray doesn't look so hot.

The others are knotting up a good bit tho. Shouldn't be much longer before pins. It's possible you might not get a second flush from them before needing to toss them but looks like you should get something.

IME it will fruit when fully colonized and only case when you can’t maintain surface moisture.
Quite surprised you haven’t gone down the agar route with your previous experience and the fact that making the SAB is prob the longest thing about starting agar...

i dont care so much about multiple flushes. right now i just want to get the experience of being able to read the conditions of the mycelium, dialing in the substrates and what not. guess ill just stop fanning the tub, i havent really been misting it because i think it was a bit too wet to begin with.


so that top tray should i crumble it and case it with 50/50+ or do you think its beyond effort to attempt fruiting? ill have to go to the store to get more supplies for that casing but from what ive read that seems to be pretty popular and effective option.

ok about my SAB (still air box?) all of my gear (and i mean pretty much everything from jar lids to berries to hpoo except my spores jars and my PC) it was all kicked down to me. i didnt make anything except for finishing my lids, which just consisted of drilling the hole and inserting the self healing ports. there was already synthetic media rtv'd onto the lids for me (probably hundreds of them, more than ill ever need). 

i have a jar of potato dextrose agar, im interested in using that and learning agar but i was under the impression that i needed a flow hood which that is somethign i do not have yet.

I wouldn't spend much more effort on the top one. I'd just keep it as happy as possible and see what happens.

I put mine into fruiting conditions when I spawn it... No need to wait. Its proven to be a good thing to have light thru the whole process.

you could fruit it now or wait a day or two. pins will show up when its ready either way.

i dropped my phone onto the tray taking this photo!!!! OOPS! oh well im sure itll recover.

i think some progress has been made because 24 hours after the first pic (it was taken before i had posted it here) since i put that parch paper on that tray is now starting to pin but perhaps it would have done it regardless of the paper or not lol. im pretty excited because ive been researching and i was considering crumbling and restarting it in another tray with a proper casing but this morning i found several pins! mostly side pins (eh ill take em!) but i think theres 1 or 2 coming up in the center too.

now that i have a little bit of pin action going hopefully in a week or two ill have some fruit porn to share!

wouldnt it smell bad? it smells pretty much the same as the brf cakes. the surface is also dry?

im not disputing your claim just trynig to better understand.

even so, this was meant to be a testing tray for the liquid culture (i didnt label it or anything but im pretty sure its 1:1 spawn to sub) so im not upset about this tray.

maybe i wont consume the fruits but would they be ok to collect spore from for the next round of syringes?
