These experts sure think that they are detrimental in the long run in many cases, in this feature film length debate that culminates in a vote, 126 voted Yes, 66 voted and 34 blank votes were cast on the proposal that longterm psychiatric medication doesmore harm than good.


Not intended to make people quit their meds, please do not quit psychiatric meds against medical advice.

what psychiatric meds are we talking about here? Taking Xanax every day for 10 years is going to do more harm than Buspar or something like that imo

They did me a lot of good. Id go as far as to say that they probably saved my life (sort term Risperidone + long term Escitalopram).

I still take the Escitalopram(Lexapro) but will probably try tapering off some time if my Doc is cool with it. It doesnt cause me any side effects(that i'm aware of) but i'd prefer to not to have to take it if i dont need it anymore

Edit: obviously i didnt watch the hour long video, just throwing my 2c in there

the issue is simply that they're used too often, especially off-label. if people who didn't need them weren't receiving them then the net benefits would outweigh the net risks. the issue really has more to do with economics than the drugs themselves

I think with any drug only the user is truly equiped to difine it's value. Our brain chemisty, coping mechanisms, and experiences are all different. I have seen people who really benefited from antipsychotics. I have also seen people who use them for a long time and become incapable of managing without them.

Imagine mental illness is a mountain, everyday you climb over it, and become an expert, you know every rock and steep spot. Then one day a ski lift shows up, like psych meds. After years of using that ski lift, you will no longer be able to climb the mountain like you used to. If the ski lift disappears, you might not make it up that mountain at all.
