It’s not really a hike. The top 1/3 is rock climbing.

Seemed like a lot of finger pointing was directed at that south Korean expedition leader too who refused to be interviewed for that doc.

This is Mount Washington in New Hampshire.

Looks harmless. Looks like a hill compared to even the 14,000 footers in the Rockies. I was shocked to learn that since 1849 there have been 137 fatalities. Supposedly several weather patterns collide there which produces some really, really bad weather systems. The highest wind velocity ever recorded at any weather station was recorded on Mount Washington. 231 MPH. And it's very innocent looks attract unprepared hikers. The majority of the fatalities were reportedly hypothermia.

I climbed that when I went to summer camp in New Hampshire when I was 12. We climbed a mountain a week that summer. My glutes were tight AF. Mt Washington seemed easier than other hikes that summer. We did the entire ascent and decent in a day. Other ascents required camping.

I’m not terribly impressed with the Rockies 14,000 footers considering you start at 9,000. I’m impressed with people who climb the volcanos in the PNW. Those are truly 14,000 foot ascents.

I hated camp at the time but we did a lot of cool shit. We canoed from little squam lake, across big squam, portaged a few miles to lake winnipesauke and then traversed the entire length of that lake. We camped out on little islands coverd with blueberries. I wish I had appreciated it at the time.

I think I understand why so many people died on k2 that time
first off it snowed for 2 weeks before they had a chance to go
so the first day they went was the day the sun was out
the sun was just blasting the mountain with u.v. rays all day because it's so high up
as night came it didn't really get cooler
the heat from the day was still sticking around
and that's why their were so many avalanches, the temp really doesn't get it's lowest until like 4am 5am in the mourning
dumb asses

This article posted a day ago.

https://explorersweb.com/2019/01/21/winter-8000ers-off-they-go/

Winter attempts are being made right now -- expeditions on K2, Nanga Parbat, and Manaslu.

K2 28,251 feet.
Manaslu 26,781 feet.
Nanga Parbat 26,660 feet.

Right now the temps at base camp of all three (as of this second)

K2 51 degrees below zero.
Manaslu 23 degrees below zero.
Nanga Parbat 47 degrees below zero.

K2 has never been summited in winter. Nanga I think just once by a two man team in 2016. I don't know about Manaslu.

Can K2 finally be conquered in winter? I doubt it. Who knows though. As of roughly 24 hours ago they were between camp 1 and 2.

They got a long ass way to go.

Quote:
K2

The two teams, led by Alex Txikon and Vassily Pivtsov, reached K2 Base Camp last Wednesday. Txikon is delighted with the igloos he built. “I’ve had the best night in a winter camp ever,” he said, adding that the snow houses are warmer, more wind-resistant and more silent than tents. Although they are in Pakistan, the team, which includes five Nepali climbers, performed a traditional Buddhist ceremony last weekend. Waldemar Kowalewski of Poland has joined their expedition.

Meanwhile, Vassily Pivtsov and some of his members are back in Advanced Base Camp after a first push well above Camp 1 towards Camp 2 and a rough night in strong winds. “Yesterday we didn’t descend, because were sure that the wind wouldn’t be so strong at 6,000m,” the expedition team has just reported. “Today, we fixed ropes up to 6,300m.”

Manaslu

“After overnighting at 6,000m, we have moved forward to Camp 2 at 6,400m,” Simone Moro wrote earlier today. He and Geljen Sherpa struggled to find a route through huge crevasses and seracs, until they reached a point where ladders are required — something they don’t have and are not part of their alpine-style ascent. Instead, they need to find an alternative route, after waiting out some upcoming bad weather in Advanced Base Camp.

Nanga Parbat

Daniele Nardi’s team are back in BC after leaving a cache at 6,200m, slightly above Camp 3, last week. About the hard conditions, Tom Ballard shrugged: “What did you expect? It is winter on the ninth highest peak in the world. No picnic.”

https://explorersweb.com/2019/01/31/winter-8000er-update-despair-on-nanga-parbat-k2-climbers-still-hopeful/

The winter attempt 26,759 ft high Manaslu has been called off. The team on 26,660 ft Nanga Parbat is on its way to being called off as well because a ton of the team's resources got buried in snow (from an avalanche it appears). Tents, gear, sleeping bags, fuel, food, and equipment. They stashed it there on camp 3, went back down to camp 2 (good call) because of avalanche risk, returned and it was all gone.

Only the 2 teams on K2 still remain. The temp at basecamp of K2 is currently at 56 below zero.

If OP is still looking for an answer as to “why?” you should watch the Mountain documentary on Netflix for answers.  Beautiful film too, it’s almost meditative.

I guess the latest update is fucking britsh and italian ambassadors had to go to the fucking embassy in Pakistan to get them to allow a helicopter to be flown in the area near the moutain after they just shot down two indian plane like yesterday or some shit. but it was to late in the day to attempt rescue so they're gonna do it tomorrow. Still no sign or movement or radio/satellite contact. What a shitshow with the helicopter. :nonono:

helicopters had to stand down due to weather after trying several attempts. They are standing by in Pakistan but weather is supposed to get worse in the afternoon. Theres a russian team that's acclimated and "not afraid of bad weather." the team on k2 is also standing by to attempt rescue but are unable to because of the approaching weather. So basically doesnt look good for dewds and still no contact/sign of life.
