Heat doesn't cause contamination during colonization. Contamination causes contamination. Heat just helps out what's already there if its there

Bodhi, would you agree with temperature fluctuations causing condensation (pulling water out of the grain), which leads to "standing" water, which leads to a greatly increased chance for the bacteria already present in small amounts to bloom and ruin everything?

Idk. Seems like a pretty popular theory. But most of the endospores that could theoretically survive our pressure cooking probably wouldn't be able to grow in grain jar conditions anyway. The ones that are aerobic like clostridium make terribly bad smells that would be super obvious

Hmm.. so is what we consider mildly bacterial jars (thick mycelium but no smell) not even bacterial? Maybe just how mycelium looks when it's overly wet?

Not an expert on mushrooms like Bod, but I am an expert on soils, organic material, and the movement of water through them.  It doesn’t work like that.

Simple test: Make a shoebox or a mono, put the lid on the right way and snap it into place, then just leave it set somewhere with a constant temperature.

After a day or two, despite the temperature having had plenty of time to balance out, you will still get moisture beading up on the sides and top of your box.

The inside of your tub, of any size, is not a static environment.  There is something living in there.  Metabolizing nutrients and using them to fuel growth.  Producing its own heat.  That will always create an imbalance in temperature between the inside of the box and the outside when the box is sealed.

It’s the imbalance of temperatures between the interior and exterior of the box that causes the condensation.  No different than the coils on an AC unit, or a moonshine still.

If you want to control the amount of standing water in your tub, exposure to air and increased evaporation is the method you want to use, not the thermostat.
