Best way to look for early contamination while spawning w straw?
    #25746680 -

I slightly overheated my straw during pasteurization but i had no other straw so i had to continue along and hope for the best. After 3 days of adding my Cubensis spawn , i peaked for the 1st time and it looks like the white mycelium is growing at a fast rate throughout the straw. I'm hoping i'm lucky and it goes well. Can a healthy grow be possible with slightly overheated straw? Or should i expect mould soon? What should i be looking for and also is it safe to take peaks here and there if it means introducing light quickly to have a look at whats going on/take pictures with flash to upload here.

Give it light! Light makes for healthier, happier fungus.

What do you mean by "slightly". A few degrees? And for how long?

Well the straw was like just above simmering where the water was bubbling a little but not fully boiling (was on low heat) for about 45min.. And why introduced to light after adding spawn to the straw ? Doesn't it need pure darkness to colonize all the straw. I was told to leave it in darkness for 12 days approx before adding casing layer and then waiting a few more days then add light.

So you don't actually know what temp your straw was at? Spend $20 an get a nice digital meat thermometer. No mas guessing.

12hrs on 12 hours off Light pattern is now considered beneficial. Colonizing in the dark is dated information, for cubes anyhow.

Im using a kit with specific instruction to not introduce any light during this period. You are saying its beneficial . I'm stuck in the middle and want to play it safe since i already likely overheated the straw.

Pasteurization kills all the bad stuff, but leaves all the good stuff living. You might have overpasteurized. It may be ok. You'll just have to see.

Seriously, though, give it light. Fungi have been demonstrated to possess circadian rhythms. Colonizing in total darkness is what we used to do a long time ago. Thousands of growers here will attest that light is not detrimental. Many have data that points that light is beneficial to all stages of growth. Trust us rather than your kit's instructions.
