Ok so about a year ago i started messing around with manure as some of you might remember.
I had success for a while but eventually i blundered and left a spent monotub open in my workplace before going away for a month. As you can probably guess it was a green dusty brick when i returned and since then everything i did ended up green and dusty.
I searched the forum and experimented implementing the skills i use everyday in my profession and i have finally found a method that has not disappointed me (19/22 success).
I figured i cant be the only one without a filter or even a sanitary work space so i wanted to share my final formula for now.
Ingredients will be in metric or guessed since iam too lazy to weigh everything exactly and it hasnt made mutch difference in the results.
750ml jar,
Tyvek or filter patch. (i buy the jar with the filter already attached for 1,95 euro but this may not be available to everyone.
a handfull of WBS
About a spoon of gypsum
Heat resistant sanitary silicone (with antifungal properties preferred).
Large plastic bag that can withstand hot water.
up to 3 liters of soaked bulk material (i use pure horse manure since i have 5 horses on the farm. Fine cut straw, coir or a mixture can be used as well but the final fruit was significantly weaker on coir and noticeably weaker on pure straw and it has contaminated on me twice.
More gypsum, this time a cup or big handfull.
Pressure cooker (sorry poor people, there is no reliable way around it).
Optional: 10 grams of kelp powder.
Optional: 10 grams moringa powder. (seems to help prevent the contamination's i got on the fully colonized substrate after 2-3 flushes)
The rest is pretty straight forward and because i want to keep it simple i will assume you already know your basics such as preparing your WBS and manure.
Cut or drill 2 holes in the lid of your jar, about 5mm amd 25mm, a little variation doesnt matter.
Cut tyvek to size for the big hole and use the silicone to glue it over the hole (remember to always clean and sand the surface when using adhesives)
Now for what is likely the most important part of what makes this suitable for dirty workplaces: the injection port.
Just put a nice blob of silicone on the small hole and use something like a piece of rolling paper on both sides of the whole to smooth and shape the blob, it needs to be about a centimeter thick in the end.
Let it dry for about 24 hours depending on the particular brand of silicone.
Now mix the WBS and spoon of gypsum in the jar and PC it thoroughly with the lid loosely on (i like t put a little piece of metal wire under the lid to avoid it creating a vacuum once it cools. I PC at maximum pressure (my 20 euro PC had setting 1 and 2 and doesnt specify the pressure achieved) for about 90 minutes.
Let it cool off in the PC and wash your hands thoroughly (i work in health care so i use Sterilium lotion from my workplace). Open the PC and while holding your breath quickly remove the wire and close the lid, seconds matter here since the inside of the PC will be relatively sterile once opened but with the amount of spores i have floating in my house it wont be for long.
Double check if it isn't too hot anymore (about 30 celsius is fine) get your syringe out and get the needle glowing for a second wile pointing it downwards and while it cool for a few seconds you put a small piece of alcohol soaked fabric on the silicone injection port and in a quick motion inject trough the fabric and the silicone. With my Koh samui strain colonization takes about a week.
Mix the bulk ingredients (manure/gypsum/optional) thoroughly and make shure the moisture content is good to go (this can be found all over the forum so i wont go into detail).
Pasteurize in the plastic bag by submerging it in 65-75 celsius water for 2-3 hours (could be overkill). I like to close the bag with a rubber band since this allows the bag to vent some pressure we it gets hot.
Now just make an appropriately sized monotub following one of the many methods found on the forum but use tyvek for the gas exchange because this seems the most safe method when dealing with a heavily contaminated workplace.
When the jar is colonized its time for more compulsive handwashing(proper handwashing protocol can be found on youtube and should not be ignored)
Finally just break up the colonized WBS in the tub and mix it with the substrate, i do this all with my washed but bare hands and work as fast as possible.
Colonize and fruit as normal but make shure the substrate is fully colonized because even pasteurized substrate will contam in the kind of conditions i work with here once the lid is lifted for harvest.
Harvest is again a matter of being quick and of course: Handwashing protocol is God!
