They should just have one of those cable rides to the top, and make a swanky observation deck with a rotating restaurant and a gift shop.

There's a Starbucks and a Walmart on the summit of Everest now

I tend to disagree.  I'm not up for either, but look at all the people who are so eager to sign up for Mars colonization.  It's in the human spirit.  People have always just set off for places, and I think that glory is usually what they are seeking on some level, but I think that the type of glory some people require is way off the charts in terms of what sex offers.  It's a raw drive, just like sex, but I don't think they are one in the same, I think it is more of a parallel drive.

I gotta give it up to both Elisabeth Revol and Tomasz Mackiewicz -- they're obviously bad ass climbers to make it to the top of that monster in winter. But if it weren't for those bad asses from K2 who came over to save them, she'd be an icicle up there right now. And Mackiewicz still is...not far from the summit.

lol i like how supporters had to raise money. Were they just gonna not go if they didn't raise 50k?

I don't really understand the extremes that the French Climbers took it.

Winter mountaineering is great for a lot of reasons though.

Self reliance is scaled up ten-fold. There's so much more solitude in the Winter.

When you get in deep and you know there's a thin thread connecting you with life; that's an awesome feeling.

I just finished an avalance course so I can start traveling more safely in the backcountry.
Gaining and maintaining these skills is a never ending process.

Yep. For real, they were 100% not going to go unless they got their money.

it would suck
you wouldn't be able to breathe
if you ran you'd lungs would pop and start bleeding

I'd be afraid of avalanches too when the snow thawed

if it was easy to get up there i'd definitely spend a night outside

Simple, hire a helicopter to take you to the peak in summer, then they drop you off for an hour, then pick you up and fly back down, now you have experienced the peak. Fuck all that "it really makes on feel alive" and "the adrenaline maaaaaaaaan", stupid fuckers!

what about this dude

free solo'd el capitan

3,000 plus feet of vertical rock, and he didn't use anything. Nada. No ropes, no safety equipment, nothing.

Honestly I don't even know how it's humanly possible.

He did it, but I rate what he did as even more insane than the two french climbers who tried scaling Nanga Parbat in winter

Some people like to live on the very edge of their abilities. Sword swallowers are a good example. Evil Ka-knee-vul is another good example.

For sure, but also a lot of it is just for sake of pure competition.

With mountain climbing for example, it's who can reach the summit first. Then when that's done it's who can do the most difficult route (this is perplexing to me because when it comes to nature aren't we taught to do the safest thing, doing the most dangerous and treacherous thing just for bragging rights seems awfully stupid to me). Then when that feat is conquered it's who can do the most dangerous route in the most dangerous season (winter obviously). With rock climbing something like El Capitan, it's who can scale it first, then who can do it the fastest, and ultimately they're at a point with it where it's who can it in the most dangerous fashion.

Person 1: "I climbed El Capitan!"

Person 2: "So, I climbed it faster than you."

Person 3: "Yeah well I climbed it faster than both of you but in winter."

Person 4: "LOLZ I climbed it faster than all 3 of you in winter and with no ropes."

Those French climbers were actually (as of a couple years ago) in a competition with another team to become the first climbers ever to summit Nanga Parbat in winter. The guy who died up there was supposedly obsessed about it. Like it was literally his 7th attempt or some shit like that in winter.

Egos, man.
