Why would anybody attempt to climb one of the most dangerous mountains on earth in winter? * 2
    #25719774 -

Why would people want to climb some of the already most dangerous mountains on earth in the Himalayas -- and dramatically increase their likelihood of dying by attempting these peaks in winter? I was just reading a story from earlier this year where a French female climber and her partner attempted Nanga Parbat, which is just about on every top 5 list for most dangerous mountains on earth (and that's in the normal climbing season where conditions are considered "optimal"), and they attempted it in winter where temps drop near minus 50 on the mountain with gale force winds that will literally blow you off it to your death. Well, to nobody's surprise, her partner died up there and she had to be rescued by a couple of the best mountaineers in the world, or else she'd still be up there today as a frozen corpse (her partner's body is still up there, and this happened like a year ago).

Why do it? And I don't mean why do people climb mountains. I get that part. Climbers are naturally drawn to summits. But why attempt something like that in winter? Isn't the point to just reach the summit? Isn't trying something like that in winter like saying...I want to go into the most dangerous neighborhood in the US, and do it at midnight just to increase the chances I may get robbed and/or killed.

Also saw where an elite team of climbers tried K2 in winter this past year and called it off after being out there at the base of the mountain for like over a month. The weather was too deadly. Again, K2 in the best of weather poses like a notorious 25% death rate for those who try it. And they wanna try that shit in winter? Google "K2 weather". It's like literally minus 57 at the base of the mountain. Seriously look it up. Can you imagine what the fucking peak is like? K2 to this day has still never been summited in winter in recorded human history by the way.

Here's the links to the two stories I referenced (both of which happened in 18').

And if you wanna brief glimpse into the hell that climbers go through by climbing in the himalayas in winter, check out this short video by this American climber. He's the 1st American climber to ever summit an 8,000 plus meter mountain in winter and he was on "only" (I say the world "only" jokingly btw) the 13th highest peak in the world, and it looks like sheer hell.

That mountain was Gasherbrum 2 for the record.

Well a good person would climb it as a personal accomplishment and a shitty person would do it to bolster their ego and brag about it for the rest of their lives.

Pro tip: the ONLY person you should EVER compete with is yourself. Comparison is the thief of happiness.

Only hope can give rise to the emotion we call despair. But it is nearly impossible for a man to try to live without hope, so I guess that leaves Man no choice but to walk around with despair as his companion.

Well at least a venture like that would be enormously beneficial to science. So a death (or deaths) wouldn't go in vain.

These two French climbers who attempted Nanga Parbat wouldn't have even had the bragging rights of first mountaineers to scale it in winter, because a pair of other climbers did that like a few years ago. So their claim to fame would be, "we were the second pair of climbers to reach the peak of this particular mountain in winter!"

:speechless:

Well the dude who ultimately died on the mountain, apparently was obsessed with climbing it first in winter, got beat to it by another pair of climbers, claimed the other pair of climbers lied, still wanted to do it anyway (it was like his 8th attempt on that same mountain in winter), and the mountain finally got him. He reached the summit, got deathly sick right beneath the peak and couldn't move anymore. And froze to death.

Amazingly Elisabeth Revol somehow survived, thanks to a couple of elite mountain climbers who were flown from K2 to Nanga Parbat for the rescue, and she may or may not have her toes and fingers today.

This was them:

Its kind of like free climbing, it's literally asking for just one thing going wrong to end up dead.  https://www.google.com/amp/s/relay.nationalgeographic.com/proxy/distribution/public/amp/adventure/features/athletes/alex-honnold/most-dangerous-free-solo-climb-yosemite-national-park-el-capitan
Its cool in a sense of sheer risk and appreciation of perfection in performance but astoundingly arrogant in the denial of the realities of failure.

It's the achievement of survival and accomplishment, pushing that boundary just that one step further.

I've tuna fished in deep rough ocean, jumped off mountains with a parachute, hiked into caves for days... many more nuts things. It's that feeling of being alive against all odds. Admittedly I never did any real stupid shit as above, everything I've done has been done before, but I get the trip.

You're right... Me too actually.

It's about the journey, not the end.

Just stop doing things that bring about the end under the claim that it's "safe" is all I can say.

Adventure on.

Dying on a mountain climb is exactly how most mountain climbers want to die.  By increasing the odds to make it happen with dangerous climbs, success ramps up the epicness ov their life journey and death fulfills their ultimate desire.

Look at this monster

The peak rising above the clouds

Rated the second most dangerous mountain on earth in this list, right behind Annapurna.

https://gearjunkie.com/worlds-10-most-dangerous-mountains

It has a 22% death rate (deaths to summits ratio). 31 climbers died attempting to reach its summit before it was first successfully climbed in the 50's. As of today there has been 82 recorded deaths on the mountain.

The timeline of the rescue

I gotta give it up to both Elisabeth Revol and Tomasz Mackiewicz -- they're obviously bad ass climbers to make it to the top of that monster in winter. But if it weren't for those bad asses from K2 who came over to save them, she'd be an icicle up there right now. And Mackiewicz still is...not far from the summit.
