It's not illegal to posses or manufacture chlorine gas, and as a matter of fact, there are no (successful) countries in the world that do not produce chlorine gas. It's a necessary part of a basic water purification system.

The OPCW just confirmed today that they found no evidence whatsoever of nerve agents; only traces of chlorine which as Kryptos noted is very commonly used everywhere in life saving applications.

For those of you that thought Assad was responsible for a nerve agent attack and the Trump bombings were justified...      whoopsie!

Chlorine use is banned by the chemical weapons treaties. It’s not illegal to possess or manufacture, but it is a war crime to use as a weapon.

Chlorinated hydrocarbons aren’t likely to be formed from water sanitation, but are likely to be formed when highly reactive chlorine gas interacts with the environment.

Quote:
On the basis of the information received and analysed, the prevailing narrative of the interviews, and the results of the laboratory analyses, the FFM cannot confidently determine whether or not a specific chemical was used as a weapon in the incidents that took place in the neighbourhood of Al-Hamadaniyah and in the area of Karm al-Tarrab.

You have misrepresented this statement.

Even though Assad was vindicated by the OPCW, Bolton just sent out a dog whistle to the rebels:

US to act 'very strongly' if Syria uses chemical arms
Quote:
US President Donald Trump's national security adviser warned Wednesday that the United States would respond "very strongly" if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad uses chemical weapons in an offensive to retake Idlib province.

"We are obviously concerned about the possibility that Assad may use chemical weapons again," he said.

"Just so there's no confusion here, if the Syrian regime uses chemical weapons we will respond very strongly..."

I think this is a clear hint to the rebels of how they can secure some US help... fake a chemical attack against them.  We'll see whether they respond.

Things have gotten peaceful in Syria since Assad recaptured territories taken by US backed rebels, and this year over 600,000 Syrians have already returned home to live under Assad.

This will also relieve the refugee burden on the EU.  Hopefully, we don't stay and fight in the remaining territories, but that is very likely given the US has a history of being genocidal maniacs since WWII.

Uh oh.  Looks like Trump got pressured into pushing regime change in Syria.

Trump Does 180 Shift On Syria: Regime Change Back On The Table
Quote:
The radical departure from Trump’s prior outspokenness against militarily pursuing Syrian regime change, both on the campaign trail and during his first year in the White House, reportedly involves “a new strategy for an indefinitely extended military, diplomatic and economic effort there.

This even though one of the Pentagon’s main justifications for being on Syrian soil in the first place — the destruction of ISIS — has already essentially happened as the terror group now holds no significant territory and has been driven completely underground.

But most worrisome about the Post report is that sources said to be close to White House policy planning on Syria suggest that Trump has made a commitment to pursuing regime change as a final goal.

Once again the neocons got it all wrong.

Though much of Syria is returning to normal, the US still refuses to leave:

Pentagon Considers Illegally Occupied Syrian Areas US Territory
Quote:
Bipartisan hardliners in Washington consider all areas occupied by Pentagon forces virtual US territory, subject to its will under its rules, defying the sovereign rights of nations, fundamental international law, and its own Constitution.

Northern and southern parts of Syrian territory are illegally occupied by US forces, intending to stay indefinitely.

Throughout the war, the Obama regime, and now Trump hardliners, have and continue to support the scourge of ISIS US officials pretend to oppose – along with al-Nusra and other jihadists in the country, used as imperial foot soldiers, waging war on sovereign Syria for regime change.

Washington intends permanent occupation of the country. It warned Assad against attempting to liberate territory it controls.

Assad called uninvited US forces in Syria “invaders,” illegally occupying territory where they don’t belong – flagrantly flouting international, constitutional, and US statute laws.

Months earlier, Sergey Lavrov slammed Washington’s agenda in Syria, saying:
“(T)he Americans have taken a course of dividing the country. They just gave up their assurances, given to us, that the only goal of their presence in Syria – without an invitation of the legitimate government – was to defeat Islamic State and the terrorists.”

Vladimir Putin, Lavrov, and other Russian officials know the US supports ISIS and other terrorists in Syria, as well as in other countries. There’s no ambiguity about it.

Months earlier, Russia’s Defense Ministry released satellite video images showing US-supported troops together with terrorists comprising the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), moving freely in ISIS-controlled parts of Deir Ezzor province.

Endless US aggression in Syria continues. Despite years of Geneva, Astana, and Sochi conflict resolution talks, begun in 2012, restoring peace and stability to the country remains unattainable because Washington rejects ending the war it launched for regime change.

Western media fail to explain the cold, hard reality of what war in Syria is all about – part of Washington’s aim to replace all sovereign independent governments with pro-Western puppet rule.

The United States isn't big on leaving any place we enter. I have to wonder how things would have shaken out if Jebb or Hillary had been in office. I wonder what kind of upheaval might be occurring in Syria now. It's going to be a lot more difficult to play nuclear footsie with Russia if we pull out of Syria.
