Okay, I'm pretty sure these are poisonous. But, just in case they weren't, I went ahead and picked a ton of them. I found them in the woods by a few trees... I don't know what kind of trees they were, sorry. I'm aware that few psilocibin mushrooms grow in the woods, but I figured there was a small chance. I have included the details, along with assorted pictures.

It was found in central Iowa, in the USA.

The gills are black in the larger mushrooms, and they're an off-white in the younger ones.

The caps are, at largest, under an inch. The stems are about an inch or two long.

The stem is an off-white color. It appears to be solid. However, there is a white circle in the center of the stem.

The caps are a brownish color and are convex.

These mushrooms do NOT bruise blue, which affirms my beliefs more that it is probably poisonous.

The spores appear to be black.

Those photos are pretty fuzzy, but I'll take a wild guess anyway.

Those look close to Coprinus micaceus, a very common mushroom this time of year in North America. If you look very closely at the surface of the cap (use a magnifier) you should be able to see some tiny particles like mica (like glitter). If you can see those, then they are definitely C. micaceus. If you can't see any, there are several very similar looking mushrooms.

C. micaceus is considered a pretty good edible. But you have to get them while the gills are still white. Once they start to turn black they are too nasty to eat. Be sure to confirm the presence of the mica like particles on the caps before you consider eating them. Some of the similar species cause stomach upsets.

Coprinus micaceus, you say? Do they happen to be psychoactive? I found a LOT of them, so it would be really cool if they were.

Because that's a very poor way of hunting for mushrooms and very few actives "just grow in the woods."

If they are all turning black and eventually into an inky goo then they might be deliquescing, which means they are in the coprinus family.

I've found alot of Coprinus micaceus in my area and came across a huge clump of them yesterday growing from a stump but my field guide describes them as being poisonous..  :confused:

Well, I think that most people just aren't educated enough on shrooms to really know. When I was a little kid, my parents pretty much told me never to eat mushrooms that grow outside unless they say it's okay, because other than morels, I'll only see poisonous ones. While that is good advice (especially for a kid), it's not true all of the time. But most people haven't cared enough to find the difference.

I would like to know which field guide would list Coprinus micaceus as poisonous. What is the title of that field guide and who is its author?

Aside from having more mushroom guides than I care to count at the moment that all say C. micaceus is edible, I have also eaten them many times. The flavor is not strong, and they are small and thin fleshed, so you have to find a lot of them to do anything very worthwhile.

I wasn't disputing the fact that Coprinus micaceus are edible, it's more likely that my book is a just a bit on the old side. It even lists Trametes versicolor as being toxic!
