So i found around 20 of these mushrooms in a wooded corner of a park near me, with mostly deciduous trees (poplar, field maple, beech, holly).

It was growing straight out of the ground through the leaf litter.


Heres some photos of a mature one


Sorry the photos aren't great, it was getting dark.

Im still waiting for a spore print.

Is this a type of amanita? And is it mycorrhizal?

I have some smalls trees in pots in my garden, i would love to try and cultivate an amanita for the benefit of the trees and just to try.

I think it’s a shaggy parasol, not amanita

Looks like Chlorophyllum rhacodes - the spore print should be white. If the spore print turns out to be green then I would say Chlorophyllum molybdites (which is poisonous).

Actually, I’ve just noticed, you’re in the UK, right? In which case I would say Chlorophyllum rhacodes, as C. molybdites doesn’t grow in the UK.

Shaggy parasol is saprotrophic so maybe ill find an amanita next time.

By 'Amanita' I assume you mean Amanita muscaria, aka Fly Agaric? Those are quite different than what you have. In the UK they always have a bright scarlet red cap, we don't get the colour varieties that they have in America. The scales on top of the cap are removeable, unlike the ones in your collection. And the stem has a shaggy base (always dig up the whole mushroom with the base intact when collecting Amanitas for identification, the stem base can hold vital clues to identify them).


There are a lot of poisonous mushrooms in the genus Amanita, many of them deadly, so you need to be careful! Having said that, Amanita muscaria isn't terribly difficult to identify once you know what you are looking for, but be sure to have them checked here before you consume them. Here is a good description of them.

Some possible lookalikes include (but not limited to):
- Amanita rubescens (poisonous when raw)
- Amanita pantherina
- Amanita phalloides (deadly poisonous!)
- Some poisonous red capped Russula species may look like Fly agaric with the scales (warts) washed off

Because of the white gills, skirt and I found it at the base of some trees I thought it could be an amanita. I would like to find a Amanita Muscaria but I thought this one might be Agaricus augustus aka. the prince.

Im aware of the toxicity and wasn't planning on eating any of them. But thanks for the info.

Since starting to grow cubes what has really fascinated me is how trees and fungi work together, so would like to try cultivate a mycorrhizal species, but am unsure how to right now. I thought I could try a clone and a print on some agar.

Agaricus have a brown spore print, and pink to brown (sometimes white) gills.

This a lepiota species, lepiota procera or a similar species of lepiota.

It’s definitely not M. Procera, which has a snakeskin like stipe. This is Chlorophyllum species.

Im unsure, it looks like both. Heres some more photos of the two I collected.


The stem looks white the whole way down, that's making me lean on the side of the Chlorophyllum rhacodes

It’s definitely Chlorophyum. Procera is also usually much larger, and it is predominantly grassland species, only rarely, if ever, found in woods.
