automated air exchange?

Hi guys. I tried doing a search for threads about people using a computer fan on a timer for air exchange in their terrariums, but couldnt find much. I have an 80mm case fan that I would like to install on the side of the terrarium, with some sort of filter material behind it. I plan to install the fan in a lower portion of the terrarium to effectively evacuate the sinking CO2, and I'd have another small opening near the top of the terrarium that would be filtered as well, for air to enter the terrarium.

My questions:

1. What sort of filter material would work best with a computer fan? Tyvek, Coffee filter?

2. Do you think that having two openings in the terrarium like this would significantly reduce the humidity of the terrarium? I'm using perlite, btw.

3. Does anyone know of any good information on determining optimal air exchange times with a fan setup like this? Should I run it once a day, once every 6 hours, etc?

Any information or advice greatly appreciated! Thanks shroomerites!

I use a fish tank air pump and filter it


Its just polly fill stuffed into a container with air in one end, and out the other.
And just leave it running 24 7

Thanks for the reccomendation Loki! I assume you simply place the bottle with water inside the terrarium, and this produces adequate humidity? In other words, this would eliminate the need for perlite? Thanks again!

Yes, It does add to humiderty.
But i still use a perlite layer.
Depends on the size of the chamber.

I read somewhere that the air exchange provided by an airpump was insufficient for casings.

Is that tidbit of info incorrect?

I have a terrarium with airstones under a layer of perlite, keeps my setup at an even 94 humidity, but for air exchange I have an ultrasonic humidifier running at zero humidity and zero mist to provide air exchange.

Well, i use one air pump for 1 to 8 40cm by 20cm casings, with no problems.

You would be amazed how much air this things can pump in 24 hours.

Thanks for the help guys. I believe I'm going to go with a poor man's pod style setup, and forego using the computer fans. The loss of humidity from the holes, the need for wiring, and the limited amount of information and growlogs which utilize them have all changed my mind against them. Gonna stick with something more tried and true, and the airpumps do seem to fit the bill nicely.

I use this for air exchange, run 24/7 and then a cool mist that is run every other half hour.
