Re: what are the perks of "working out" [Re: ichugwindex]
    #25607529 -

Strength is important in about every aspect of your life. If you want to actually do your own yard work or chores, if you want to be able to open some business doors without looking and feeling pathetic, if you want good posture and to have less pain in the future, if you want the confidence that comes with looking like you can actually do something and not need help with everything.

Body building is a different thing, but it's nice to be bigger. You get bullied less, people listen to you more, chicks want you more (it's even easier to make friends when you're more attractive) so it's easier to stay positive, etc.

Just looking and feeling good is a huge part of happiness in general and if you want an easier life mentally you should stay physically in shape.

The biggest benefit to staying active and working out is less anxiety for me, which is a good enough reason in its self.

Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

Hey so you sound a lot like me about 2 years ago. I did a lot of running and yoga. I also believed that lifting had no unique benefits. I began lifting around 1.5 years ago

well lifting and strength training is progressive. you can see your strength go up from 100 lbs to 200 lbs. it is progressive and rewarding in a way that yoga or running isn't

but the HUGE reason that I think I didn't realize lifting is key is testosterone. It sounds funny but testosterone doesn't make you some macho manly man. it makes you more driven is the main thing. if you have a girlfriend it will also make your boners more consistent and strong. but that drive is probably the main reason that I lift. It is something that I hope to keep up with for the rest of my life for that reason

within the context of a solid mobility program and good form its incredibly safe.

and lastly, I lift heavy about 3 times a week. you can make great gains doing that for 1 hour. I tried 6 days a week lifting as well and this 3 day program is what stuck

Lifting for me is not even about aesthetics anymore. Realistically I look the same unless I am shirtless. Its more about that drive and discipline it gives me. You set specific goals and work towards them. also; don't knock the testosterone part. its one HELL of a drug

I’m just mad because I won’t be able to lift weights for a year after my surgery which is soon. Too much pain to work out atm.

Only hope can give rise to the emotion we call despair. But it is nearly impossible for a man to try to live without hope, so I guess that leaves Man no choice but to walk around with despair as his companion.

does lifting weights = longevity? Seems like a bold statement. You guys have really enlightened me but that seems like a stretch.

Vincent knows all about bold statements.  Just look at Jim Fix.  Fitness doesn't give you an extra 10 years of life a lot of things factor in such as if you breathed in polluted air.

Arnold turned lifting weights into the most successful body builder of all time, a celebrated movie career, and governorship. Plus he married a Kennedy.

If you are cherrypicking examples.

first of all nobody in the history of ever who is muscular has had to ask the question, "is being muscular an advantage?" it is. virtually everyone will have more respect for you without you ever opening your mouth, men and women alike.

the more muscle mass you have the more you can get away with eating without getting fat. also as long as you train high reps, light weight, building muscle helps your back, knees, shoulders, and other joints stay working well into old age

and as has already been pointed out, testosterone is a major contributor to motivation and well being, and more muscle = more test

This. and lastly, there are benefits unique to strength training that cannot be obtained by cardio at all. So the answer is yes. longevity benefits

Whereas I have learnt that many of the benefits of cardio can be obtained from lifting. The founder of 5x5 ( a really intensive heavy compound lifting program) has upped his mile time, ran a 5k and won kettlebell competitions just with his program of lifting heavy weights

If you up your squat and deadlift, your ability to kick, run, sprint, hike and pick things up greatly increases. if you told me all of the benefits of lifting thrice a week for an hour and a 10 minute mobility routine daily I would tell you that you are a liar and seriously wouldn't believe it

somethings I just disagree with regarding the classic fitness/lifting advice is the excessive protein intake and lack of proper mobility advice. I think that the discussion around stretching is lacking and you are just gonna fuck yourself up

I wish that the whole image around lifting was just an average joe who had more drive in life. not some bodybuilder douche flexing and talking about his high protein diet and bragging about how alpha he is. it really turns people off and makes this amazing health promoting activity less accessible

This. I enjoy running, but lifting is a unique and much more desirable euphoria.

Also it helps with lifting furniture and other random stuff. Or your job, for some people.

But mostly the euphoria.

I don’t enjoy weight lifting very much, and not for judgemental reasons been friends with two closely.  I do however really enjoy body resistance exercises like crunches pull ups etc is that cardio?  Cuz it feels like a mix of both after a good workout you get a better high than strict lifting or strictly
Cardio IMO

I bought my own dumbbells for home a month ago. So I just do a bunch of exersises throughout the night. Before bed time.

I run and row and cycle at the gym.

And I dance.

I'm going to be illogically positive until the day I die.

Personally I find if I have to go lift heavy shit outside of the gym my body will automatically look for the good form, so it's like the body is educating itself in not how to fuck itself up.

Also I think more about how and what I eat.

And also when I first started in the gym I was very self-conscious about looking stupid or having to wait for equipment, "was I making weird noises" and many other stupid things. But now I don't care at all at all, just do what I need to do in the best way that it will improve me. It helps seeing other people with confidence in the gym and then you mimic them I suppose. It's not an ego thing, it's a getting over insecurities thing

strength is a huge advantage against what? only in prison do muscles get pitted against each other. You can look like brock lesnar but youre not taking anyone out with a bullet in each lung

edit: oh ok its kinda like getting better at guitar? 0 real life application but still awesome?

Staying fit and strong is a good plan for the long run in life.  When I used to do landscape construction and stone installations for a living, I was a pile of ripped muscle (not now tho...)

I never had back or joint issues, my body responded quicker to everything, I felt more confident in the world, and I could fuck for hours!

I need to get back in shape as a matter of life.  I've been slowly getting there this season through intense backpack hunting and firewood collecting.

I need to get in shape for elk season next year, which is going to be A LOT of work.
