what are the perks of "working out"
    #25606244 -

As in are there any actual perks to "getting swolt" as apposed to doing just some cardio?

somehow I think lifting heavy shit all week might be bad for you but Im not a doctor.

Im hoping by the end of this thread Ill gain insight and not just think that weightlifting= vanity and/or superiority complex. SURELY there are reasons for people to do this that dont involve ego.

Trying to be open minded and everything so please just let me know how you feel and why you feel the way you do before you just attack me

I train bjj/grapling and strength is a huge advantage. Its also a goal system. Being unable to squat 200 lbs and then working hard to one day achieve it is very rewarding. Obtaining a fit buff bod can be very difficult and it says a lot about a person's discipline. As for aesthetics, being fit is attractive. Its just a fact.

strength is a huge advantage against what? only in prison do muscles get pitted against each other. You can look like brock lesnar but youre not taking anyone out with a bullet in each lung

edit: oh ok its kinda like getting better at guitar? 0 real life application but still awesome?

Are you implying that strength is uselss in a grappling match? Also, arent all hobbies ultimately useless?

Cardio is good for the heart.  Weight training is the middle man for getting chicks, but when you stop going you lose the muscles.

im outright saying that strength is borderline usless in the modern era because of guns( or machines in manual labor) and because all that muscle mass is diminishing your quickdraw. Anyone slow enough to be caught in a grappling match must be in prison.

I do get that but I want to know WHY. What motivates people to do this?

well for this particular topic i think people waste their day lifting heavy shit 4-6 days a week to feel like they are better than everyone else. A power fantasy. I Honestly want to be proven wrong because I think thats real bleak

Genetics/upbringing.

Some people NEED to make music. Or to write. So people NEED to lift weights. Comes down to personal motivation.

One gain is a mental boast. It can give u more self-confidence, less self-shame (if u have it). Some people take it too far but how it makes u feel is a good feeling. A comforting feeling.

Also its useful for movint heavy items like moving/helping others with labor.

Yup.

Some people are motivated toward the social ideals of beauty but some people seek it out cause their soul seeks it out. Theres a passion about it. Like playing sports, very similar sitation. Passion about the physical sensations of working out. U can high off it too. Its quite pleasant

I feel like weight training is good for you (in moderation). At least as good as cardio.

Men start losing muscle mass in their 30s as testosterone starts to drop off. This means that libido and sexual function also start to decline. As testosterone starts to drop off, belly fat (and visceral fat) start to accumulate. This in turn decreases ones ability to make testosterone (negative feedback loop).

Weight training is highly effective at staving off the effects of muscle mass decline (with age) and the resulting andropause. Why is this important? It's not all about aesthetics.

Testosterone helps men to feel vital, it gives them energy, confidence, improves mental function, reduces the chances/severity of depression.

Studies have shown that the neck-to-shoulder ratio of a man in business plays a role in defining his income and ability to climb the corporate ladder. Whether this should be the case is easily debatable, but it is a reality that goes all the way back to primitive times. That is, 'this man can take care of things' and then he is afforded a certain level of respect and admiration. I feel like these are not learned responses people have; they are deeply ingrained in our primitive minds.

Add to this some of the other comments about being disciplined, goal oriented and the fact that most people that weight train eat super clean. Seems like a worthwhile hobby to me.

Exercise is good for maintaining or increasing bone density. Breaking a sweat is good for mood, sleep, appetite.

I personally love the 'runners' high you get after hitting some heavy squats or deadlifts. It can drain you completely.

OP is debating nihilism of everything vs a specific hobby. It's a bit of a dichotomy.

Why should people go to work if they are wasting their best years and will die?
Why should people buy cars when they quickly depreciate in value and are dangerous?
Why should people travel, when happiness comes from within?

People gotta have hobbies. Lifting and working out is a really good one. It's cheap as fuck and only takes dedication and time. Lifting and reading have a lot more in common than most people would believe.
