Possible Panaeolus cinctulus * 1

Habitat: SW Washington cow pasture growing among straw and medium height grass, dung covered ground

Gills: don’t look to be attatched to stem, very dark and symmetrical, loaded with spores


Stem: hollow, thin and ranging from light brown to darker brown in color, curvy growth and bottom of stem has white residue

Cap: somewhat pointed and slightly pitted on some, brown fading into different shades in a ring like pattern


Spore print color: awaiting print but looks to be very dark/black
Very important!

Bruising: no noticeable bruising except possible bluing on bass of stem where pulled from ground


Other information:
Smell hearthy, grow in clumps and there are patches all around the field

Yarp that spore print is black as it gets. Looking like I have a few more patches to let mature too! Lived at this place for 2 years now and these are the first actives I’ve found in a seemingly endless amount of specimens growing in the pasture so thank you all for the quick ID.

Am I right to assume that these cinctulus are distinguished by their black spore print and their look alike, foenisecii, contains brown spores? Don’t wanna mix these up because they seem to be growing in really close proximity to each other.

Yes the black print, and they appear to be growing on dung, I think that's why Alan gave the positive ID even without seeing the spore print.

Also I can tell what color the print will be by seeing the charcoal colored gills, and even without that, the pruinose red stem is enough to ID these.

Spore prints are rarely needed for mushroom identification - Mostly in cases where the pics are really blurry.

Aha! I was always under the impression that the only reliable way of differentiating these was by spore print! Thanks for the tips. Do you have any tips on how to differentiate between P. cinctulus and P.olivaceus without the need for microscopy?

I am not sure if we get P. olivaceus in North America, it's a name from Europe.  It's likely that the stuff we call P. olivaceus in North America is undescribed.
