ID needed please - possible p. alutacea? * 2
    #25596185 -

Habitat:Found in horse manure which had a high straw-like content (grass I assume) in grass and heath meadows. Southern England

Gills:brown, darken with age/size, the young ones almost have a lavender or lighter hue to them.

Stem: Almost identical to liberties, perhaps a little browner, bluing at base, particularly with young ones. Some bruise blue too

Cap:Has a noticeable nipple, though not as pronounced as a liberty. Seperable gelatous membrain, dries from top down. Young ones are conical almost lib shaped but tend to flatten out as they grow.

Spore print color: Purple

Have a hopeful feeling these might be p. Alutacea but I'm not 100% they could also be p. Fimetaria, some of the younger ones definitely had some white specs near the bottom of the cap. They could just be deconica coprophila but I thought I'd ask for a second opinion as they're everywhere here and it would be a shame to waste them!

For the two bluing ones: possibly something close to P. semilanceata.
I can't tell if it's P. fimetaria though, I would like to see them in situ on the dung.

You won't find P. alutacea in the UK.

Otherwise you appear to have a mixed collection which includes at least a healthy amount of inactive Protostropharia and Deconica sp.

Welcome to the Shroomery. :toast:

Thanks for the reply! I will be going back out tomorow and will see if I can get a photo of them growing!

Ahh thank-you, I couldn't find a whole lot of information on them!

I'm almost certain none of them are the Protostropharia you've mentioned, they're the super slippery yellow ones right?

And I'm also pretty certain they are all the same species so most likely Deconica as I beleive fimetaria are quite rare?

Will update with growing pics tomorow

Day late, but better than never, I had concluded that they were a type of deconica however after noticing more blue stems and the strange white specs on the caps I'm now thinking they COULD be fimetaria?

You should print all of em. If it is fimentaria I'm sure there are some cultivators that want spores

1) Please dry and keep these finds, so that you can send it to someone with knowledge and a microscope, as well as sending some for DNA sequencing.

2) After you've picked off the mushrooms, place the poo in a plastic container with a lid on. Check if they fruit again, and take lots of pictures.

This is a very cool and exciting find!:thumbup:

Well after a little bit more book and field research I think the majority of what I have collected are in fact deconica coprophila.

Nevertheless the specimens with the blueing stem seem to have a thicker and whiter stem than the deconica? They also occasionally can be seen with the white speks around the cap particularly when young.

If I find a nice piece of poo with both the shrooms in question growing, or two pieces with the alternate mushrooms on either I'll try the tub grow and detail my findings.

If anyone is interested I would be more than happy taking spore prints and sending samples out, they seem to be really common in a few spots I frequent and it would be nice to know if they're worth the time and effort!

Those specks on the young caps are veil remnants, that's also a feature present in young Deconica species.

Your bluing ones look like Psilocybe though, I'm very interested to know what they could be.

In fact they look astonishingly similar to Heyowana's P. alutacea finds from Australia.

Yes! They look exactly like the mushrooms I am describing! I've observed those white furry bits on the stems too but have been unable to get a decent photo of it.

I saw a thread on here about them, probably where that photo you linked is from. The descriptions of them there and that photo led me to beleive I had found them, hence this threads title. I was unaware they were assumed not to grow in the UK too.

Very interesting thread. Maybe it was an Australian horse? I don't know much about horses, it seems a long way to import a live animal, but maybe they would do it if it was a special pedigree race horse or something? Although, I would imagine there would be welfare issues with importing horses such a large distance?

Where could he send samples for expert analysis?

Or, maybe the spores came from an Australian horse trainer? I know someone who has a lot of horses here in Ireland, and he employed an Australian horse trainer for a couple of months, so I know they do this. Makes me want to go out and check his fields!

I would probably start by sending PMs to Alan and Inski. I would also post the find on MO, to get more opinions.

Southeastern Mexico at the moment.

The bluing one is probably Psilocybe fimetaria.  Would be happy to study it.

I'm extremely excited to know the result. By the looks this find matches the description pretty well.

The species is kind of a 'holy grail' for me, although I have to admit that I haven't spent enough time trying to find it.
