How many transfers from a slant

Do you guys generally do a couple of transfers from a culture slant before inoculating a grain jar?

The reason I'm asking is because I just got fucked over with contams. I did a transfer from a culture slant to agar which I inoculated my master grain jar, then did g2g to 9 jars.

I used 8 of the jars to make 2 monotubs which both contaminated, I managed to get some shrooms from one, the other one contamed before any came up.

Using the slowest growing jar from the original 9 I did G2g which all contamed

Because everything ended up getting contaminated I'm guessing it happened early on which is why I'm wondering if I should have done multiple transfers from the slant to ensure its clean.

I would do at least one or two transfers just to ensure that the wedges that you put in your master jar are clean. Also if you do transfer from a slant to a petri and it is contamed, it makes it a heck of a lot easier to catch and gives you a chance to clean up your culture before you use it to inoculate jars.

So even if you grow out the wedge from the slant and it looks clean you do a couple more transfers to ensure there's nothing hiding?

I intend to use my slants the same as any other external source: via agar cleanup. No telling what I did wrong years when I made the slant.

I just go from the slant to a plate, then from that plate make another slant and use the rest of the plate as inoculant. Anything more is wasting petris IMO.
