Fungus: The Plastic of the Future
    #25573178 -

Replacing all plastic products with fungus based ones?
Maybe not, but its a start! I am sure there are a heap of products which could use this instead of plastics, which would be great!

Yea, actually that is a really good idea! Especially as they are one of the most discarded things you see going down gutters and such. Its obviously in early stages but if they figure out a way to mass produce cheaply I reckon this would be a great thing! Just a shame plastic is so damn cheap and easy to manufacture and produce, dont think any time soon itll be changing but I'm glad some people are trying to make progress on alternatives. We can't keep going the way we are.

The last product looked like they used straw as the substrate. I'd guess that after it's served it's purpose as pakaging, it could be broken up an used as animal fodder, or better yet, break it down, rehydrate, and let it fulfil it's original purpose of growing mushrooms.

Imagine if you could order your choice of pakaging and the company supplied a sample of an appropriate grain spawn! :hatsoff:

BTW. Loved the chair.

It all comes down to cost of production. They could find plastic that not only didn't come from fossil fuels, but also was extremely sturdy and flexible, and maliable, and displayed the ability to create many different polymers, and when it broke down in a reasonable amount of time turned into plant nutrients, and made all those who used it smarter and faster, and could play guitar really well. But if that plastic isn't cheaper to make than regular plastic, than fuck it, no ones making it. In the past 50 years the amount of society/culture changing tech that has been created but still hasn't seen the light of day yet cause of production costs is insane. Like right now the acceleration of tech isn't limited by human intelligence, it's limited by the cost of production the recouping of investments into development.

Everyone knows the military has the best tech, but what about the CEO of Samsung? You think he's using the latest Galaxy Sn? No that guy is using the phone that will be sold to consumers in 2030.

Even worse, than the CEO probably has better tech than the military.

I did not know plastic came from fossil fuels, paradox. Now George Carlin's bit on nature only making us so earth could have plastic has another depth to it.
