Can I make my Cyanescens patch in Autumn (now)?

I have my colonised woodchips and I've dug out my spot. I plan on layering wet woodchips, sawdust and hay, soil and obviously the colonised chips...then dumping loads of wet fallen leaves on top so they rot and help to hold in moisture.

If I make the bed now will it be OK? I don't expect much growth due to it being Autumn, then winter but will it be OK?

One website I read said you can make the bed any time of the year.

If not then I can keep the mycelium well fed and happy indoors until spring.

I should have waited before starting this project. I just didn't expect it to colonise so damn quickly!

If I go ahead and make it I'm very aware it won't fruit until next Autumn.

how cold doe sit get where you are?
I don't know exactly how cold they can stand but certainly a sharp frost won't hurt them...
Id' be tempted to whack it all out, you might get lucky this year. but probably won't get fruits until next

Winter here in the UK can get to maybe -5°C (23°F) and sometimes lower but generally it's typically 3-5°C (37-42°F).

Fuck it I'm doing it!

Also we're having a very mild Autumn although the winter bite is starting.

Why would I do that? It's extremely difficult to grow and for all of that effort the returns are minimal.

cyanescens originated from the UK, doesn't it? In that case, it'll be just fine outdoors where you are.

Yes it would definitely survive winter as a colonised patch but I'm wondering if putting spawn out now which wouldn't be as strong as a fully colonised network, would survive and be OK.

I'm thinking it will be fine. Soon find out!

I've done it and it looks great! I've very much looking forward to next Autumn!

I'm left with an enormous amount of spawn (colonised WBS/alder & oak chips) and I have a park at the end of my street. A very big park with woodchips used absolutely everywhere as mulch...

...looks like the people in my town are all being treated to a park filled with Cyanescens mushrooms next Autumn haha as quite obviously I'm going to bury the spawn all over the place.

Some enormous mounds of woodchips too. And areas inside bushes that have loads of woodchips.

Next Autumn is going to be Cyanescens heaven!!

Sorry, but it's not likely to work.

The mycelium isn't going to expand in cold weather, and it needs time to colonize the sawdust and wood chips to survive winter.

A better choice would have been to spawn to sterilized supplemented sawdust indoors, and then do a few transfers over the winter so you have dozens of bags of sterilized, non-supplemented sawdust to spawn outdoors next spring.

The reason I say non-supplemented sawdust is because grains or bran tend to attract critters which will dig up and destroy the patch.

Thanks. Well I'm glad I read this as now I can keep my other big box of spawn and use the woodchips to inoculate more to use in spring. And come spring I'll have a ready made bed waiting for me! So it's all good :smile:

I'll use the winter to make tonnes using sawdust and woodchips only...no WBS.

It appears to have actually worked! I went and checked and underneath the top layer of woodchips is an entire blanket of white mycelium. It appears to have spread over the entire area. I didn't expect it to spread so thoroughly over the winter months! Excellent!

The mycelium is thick and looks great!

So I made the patch at the end of October literally as winter was starting and by the beginning of February the entire area just below the surface chips has covered.

Just updating in case this is ever found in a search engine.

Cyans are super strong and spread easily.  It's silly to think they can't take hold in the fall, that's when they fruit.  Why would the fruit in the fall if new myc couldn't survive fall into winter.

Also it doesn't appear to have been disturbed whatsoever by animals seeking to eat the seed, although I can understand how that would definitely be a risk. I didn't put any of the WBS spawn on the surface I think that probably helped.

TC's are awesome but their word isn't truth. Good on you for trying it and reporting back. I'm in the same boat myself once my tub colonizes

I've been curious: Once the myc is outside can you just keep super spawning it until you hit the senescence roof? don't see why not

As far as I know you can continue to spread forever. The mushrooms will lay spores which will keep adding fresh genetics into the mix allowing it to stay healthy and also allowing you to spread it far and wide!

It certainly will. As long as I also don't pick all of the mushrooms each year. I'm going to leave about a third of the mushrooms to release spores to keep a healthy patch.

To the right of the above picture there is a long area (outside of the photo) which is several metres long. I've just covered it in woodchips and mud and I'm going to let the mycelium spread across.

So exciting.

Plus I had another walk around my local park this morning and they just keep laying more and more woodchips which is making more and more places to spread the mushroom love. Sillies!
