New Hobbyist - Mid-Michigan Forest Finds: ID Help

Background (if anyone cares):
I recently, somehow, became very interested in all the fungus growing around me. It was like a sudden realization that all these organisms are popping up all the time and I know nothing about them and ignore them all the time. Combine my love of photography and video with also the idea of a hunt for rare or psychoactive organisms and I'm very into it.

I'm not looking to eat these things. At the moment I'm more interested in just finding and documenting these organisms. Of course, the cool thing is I may come upon a new/rare/active species.


The Location:
Right in the middle of Michigan, out in a deciduous forest with coniferous presence. A River near some finds. Last night and earlier today it rained, the ground has been wet for some time.

The leaves have covered the ground here, it is late-October, temperatures are hovering between the high 30's F and the high 50's F. The fast few days have been averaging in the mid-40's F.

Almost all finds were either attached / near to dead / fallen trees or growing at the base of living trees. Some (#6) were a bit harder to lock down since there is so much leaf cover, but they seemed more in the in-between areas of the trees.


The Finds:
I hope I have spent enough time cataloging and organizing these finds. I believe I have at least 4 distinct species. #'s 1, 2, and 4 I think may be the same species just confusing me.


#1. (What I believe to be some kind of gymnopilus)
Location: All species were found growing (possibly attached but I"m not sure) at the base of living trees, or nearby. The ground was wet and covered in new leaf fall. They seemed to be somewhat clustered but also singular.

#2. (What I believe to be the SAME as #1 but found in a different location and generally larger)
Location: All species were found growing near or under dead / rotting / fallen trees. They seemed to like to hide under this tree fall.

#3. (What I believe to be a DIFFERENT species of gymnopilus)
Location: All specimens were growing off of log stumps that had been set aside a trail. The majority were clustered in a single log where the internal decay had left a hole in the top. They appeared very yellow or rusty in daylight.

#4. (What I believe to be the SAME as #1. and/or #2., but I found the color confusing)
Location: Same as #1.

Location: ALL specimens were growing directly off of rotting wood that looked like it had been fallen for quite some time. They grew in clusters off of the fallen wood, often if some bark was peeled away you could find more.

Location: I cannot say for sure they were not growing from wood, but these were mostly found on the forest floor not necessarily near dead wood (this particular woods has fallen / dead wood everywhere). Most of them came from a patch I came across where they grew near each other but rarely in a clump or cluster.

Location: Various but same woodland.

1 & 2 look like honey mushrooms - Armillaria
3 looks like a Pholiota
4 more honey
5 Galerina - ***deadly poisonous***!!!

I am unsure in ID’s as I am new to all of this but some of the photos are beautiful. Got some great detail in them.

hmmm - no ideas really for #6..
the last one on the unorganized - with the wiry looking stem is probably a Marasmius species, no ideas for the others
