I’ve heard some of their stuff over the years and liked it. I’m going camping next week and will be away from cell signal and would like to load a Tool album before I go. Any recommendations for someone that’s fairly new to Tool?

The older stuff is harder, more driving, more angry.  The newer stuff is more psychedelic, "deep" if you want to use that term.  I like them all.  I can at any time put on a full tool album from any point in their discography and not get tired of it at all.  That's rare as fuck for me.  I tend to get sick of everything at some point.

If you are musically inclined and you should look up some of the various youtube videos where professionals break down songs into what makes them unique and amazing.  There are some out there that are really good and cover their odd time signatures and patterns and how it makes them so different than what you normally hear from a prog rock/metal band.  I'm NOT musically inclined but most of it was explained in a way even a layman can make sense of.

I don't find 10000 days to be aggressive at all really.  Their lyrics have always been about shit like being smart and making up your own mind, not following others or being a vapid airhead cunt. :laugh:

Makes perfect sense to me :laugh:

I'd bet testing brain waves and other functions of listeners, that it's very stimulating and prone to aggression.

The dead are not nearly as aggressive.  Ambient music can be dark and somewhat psychologically aggressive.  I prefer dream-scape inducing music but I also lose interest over time.

Lot's of people claim that heavy metal mellows them out.  Although I highly doubt that.  Some people just don't know what to do with aggressive hormones and biochemicals.

I can't listen to TOOL much anymore, it fills me up with emotions, my eyes get all watery and my nose runs away! It's the only music that can get my body moving.

I was thinking about this the other day, how TOOL doesn't tour much and not many people have seen them live. I'm happy to say I've seen them twice, once on the Lateralus tour in Moline Michigan and again on the 10,000 days tour in Mississippi, I can't remember the town. Both shows were nothing short of spectacular.

I own a lot of TOOL t-shirts. I would play free poker at a local bar when I was in my late teens and early twenties and some of the guys there that I befriended started calling me TOOL guy because that's all I wore was TOOL shirts.

I don't consider myself a fan because I don't know much information about any of the band members, but I do love to listen to their music.

I don't know much about the band either, but IMO that has nothing to do with being a fan of their work.  If anything I think it says more.  I give zero fucks about maynard and his silliness, or the other members but they make amazing unique music and have done so every single time.  I really hope this next album that's been "in the works" for like 15 billion years a) actually comes out and b) is just as amazing as all the others.  the new perfect circle was NOT amazing IMO.  I was pretty disappointed by it. 

I've seen them 4 times I think..maybe 3 or maybe 5 now I'm not sure. hahaah.  I missed them the last time they came through for 10k days.

I'd recommend Ænima or Lateralus. They're easier listening, and more melodic than the previous albums.
10,000 days is good, and has its place but it might bore you...not a good place to start if you haven't heard the earlier stuff.

Opiate and Undertow are amazing, and you definitely gotta check them out too...but I'd prefer Ænima/Lateralus if I were camping.

Their absence from any streaming service has stopped me from ever really getting into them. I have Lateralus on vinyl though. Sure is a cool album.

I agree. Tool is great, but they want to bogart their music in an age of free streaming.  I'm not that big of a fan to buy their songs so they have essentially shut me out.

I agree. Tool is great, but they want to bogart their music in an age of free streaming.  I'm not that big of a fan to buy their songs so they have essentially shut me out.
