Two-Spotted Spider Mites on B. Vulcanicola.
    #25351891 -

This plant, easily one of my favorites, has been a non-stop uphill battle to keep healthy. It’s now on its second spider mite infestation. Not too bad but spider mites nontheless. It’s still growing but is definitely stunted. I’ve used i new product (SNS 217C) last night instead of the Organocide that I have used in the past because the oily residue of the Organocide has gotten pretty bothersome.I’m worried that a layer of “oil” on the leaf in the manner that the Organocide leaves could pose a significant health risk to the plant. I’ve not had an issue or anything and it does kill what it says it will but it’s still a concern. I had to clean the leaves with dish soap a couple of days after the last application. Anyways, I’m glad I caught the problem earlier this time. It should have been earlier though.

I swear this plant has been a magnet for mites. It’s like a Mecca for mites. Coming from around the world to congregate and ruin my day. I’ve never seen anything like it. This plant and my Goji Berry plant which suffers from a non stop attack of flea beatles will both need a new preventative regimen. I’ve found an organic systemic insecticide that works on (supposedly) insects, mites, and some molds. I’ll be doing a trial run of it with these plants as they will be the ultimate test of efficacy. I plan to get them both pest free over the course of a couple of days of direct foliage treatment and then I’ll start using the root drench and I’ll see what kind of reoccurrence I see. Not the best test but oh well.

Anywho, what’s a post without pictures. Here’s the B. Vulcanicola:

And here are the rotten little 8-legged bastards that are currently the bane of my existence. Forgive me for the poor image quality. They were taken with my phone through a cheap little jewelers loupe and then edited to add a magnifying overlay.

Neem oil every 3 days for about a month should get rid of every type of spider mite infestation.

Yes and no. You need Neem, Pyre, and another mixture all used 3 days a part till there's no more sign of spider mites. Spider mites gain tolerance very quickly so the ones that survive the first neem attack will likely be acclimatized to the neem and needs another compound to hit it in succession.

Also the 2 spotted spider mites are MUCH, MUCH, MUCH harder to kill than regular red spider mites.

Lime Sulphur is what I'd use. They've not built resistance to Sulphur yet. It's relatively low toxic and kills them on contact.

Thanks Karode. That's good to know. Does Sulphur come in any liquid form or do you have to sprinkle the powder on top as well as under all the leaves?

Lime Sulphur comes in a liquid form. The one I use is Yates Lime Sulphur. Some major brand over there will make a similar product I'm sure.

Smells like rotten eggs so don't spray it indoors.

Wow I had no idea. I’ll give that a try. It’s readily available in many forms here for sure. I’ve seen it for bonsai some but the most familiar use to me is for treating ringworm. I work with animals for a living and we use it to treat ringworm. That’s crazy. Thanks!
