Another back yard ID, on apricot stump.
    #2531388 -

Is there a chance they could be cubes because the stump is ajacent a my failed/spent casing compost? they look good enough to eat and give off a that great earthy aroma. Well your two cents will be appriecated. Thanks.

As DH already said, no. Those are not "cubes."

If you want an ID, get a spore print and give us some more information. A photo of the underside of a couple would be useful.

Happy mushrooming!

Interesting specimens nonetheless.

My first thought was Coprinus micaceus, but the gill color makes me wonder, I've never seen them stay white for so long. The cap shape is kind of odd as well. Do I see an older one with dark gills over on the left in the first pic? Maybe they're a non-sporulating strain of the mica caps, or maybe just late maturing. Or it's possible they're some other genus/species I'm unfamiliar with. If they drop spores and the print comes out black, I'd say C. micaceus is a fair assumption.

The presence of warts on the caps means they had a universal veil. That, plus the extremely crowded, free, white gills leads me to suspect that those are Coprinus. Your first photo seems to show one (to the upper left) that has turned black, the color the spores should be if they are Coprinus.

Try cutting one of them in half vertically. The stem in Coprinus is hollow. Also, the gills should be clearly not connected to the stem. The stem should come free from the cap fairly easily.

Species which are reasonably close in appearance to yours are C. flocculosus and C. domesticus.
