Guiness, huh?

Ok. The first time I ever drank Guiness, I was stoned. I thought it was the best beer in the world because there was this amazing lime aftertaste to it.
The second time I had Guiness, it was like someone punched me in the mouth. I was completely sober and found out that I hated the taste of it. I still don't understand why I found it so interesting and incredible when I was stoned.
I really want to like Guiness, because my boyfriend really likes it so it'll be in the fridge a whole lot when we get our apartment. The problem is, every time I try it, be it cold, lukewarm, or warm, I still can't stand it.
Should I just give up and stick with the lighter beers, or do you Guiness fans think there's some light at the end of the accquired taste tunnel for me?
Silly question, but I'm pretty damn bored and have read all of the threads posted today.

try a black and tan. pour some regular beer into a glass 1/2 way up.. then fill the rest of the glass with guiness. the guisness will float on top, its pretty cool looking and tastes really good imo

Just stick to what you like. Guiness is a aquired taste and you wouldn't be alone in not liking it. My wife hates it as with many of my friends, but it's my favorite beer. I love the taste of it. I got hooked on it by my old college roomate who was from England. I think the reason you liked it when you were stoned is because it coats your mouth (eliminates cottonmouth)and throat and light beer just taste like water .

I know exactly what you mean, I like alot of beers when I'm stoned that I usually don't drink when I'm not. Guiness is okay when I'm sober but I really like it high.

yeah...i have a friend that doesent like anythign thats non-domestic shit. But i cant help but like something like Guinness. Its the best beer. I herd about it for years without being able to try it. Saw it on TV on all the rugby things and watched a thing on why good beer is good and stuff. I guess you just learn how to appreciate it before you can like it. Its just different than what most americans are used to.

I second that. In fact it is my favorite beer hands down. It's interesting becuase I was just in Ireland and got to try Guinness there. I had always heard it was ALOT better there but chalked that up to BS. I have to say now that Guinness in Ireland is alot better. It's so delicious, not really stronger but tastes better. I asked around Ireland why it was so much better. Besides the obvoius fact it's fresher I found out that it isn't pasturized like it is here. Its so smooth and tasty. i don't drink beer often ,but when I do it's Guinness..

Guiness is my favorite beer, draft or stout. The first time I had it I had an ass warm stout and I hated it. But once I finally got around to trying it again, this time cold, I was in love. Murphy's is also excellent stuff. I just plain love beer.

OK.... I must admit firstly that I am a dark beer drinker. I love the Bell's Two hearted, Kalamazoo Stout, or Best Brown. (At least Kind Kesey knows what I'm talking about!!!). So Guinesses to me is just a rip-off of some nice local beer. But three nights ago I was drinking much guinesses and cutting out the widgets (you know those little balls that are in bottom of the cans?) and throwing them at people. any beer that is dark and has little plastic balls hiding in the bottom that i can throw at people is fine by me!

Yes I agree Krishna that Bells is great beer. I just had the Best Brown for the first time recently and it really is the best brown ale I ever drank. Guinness is one of my favorite beers too. Gotta love those widgets.
Oh and Chinacat, I told you Guinness tastes so much better in Ireland!

Part of the unique Guiness taste is that they let a batch go sour and then pastuerize it. It's added at 3% by volume to the beer that's bottled/kegged. Murphy's seems more smooth to my palate.
BTW, at the local beverage store here I noticed that most of the Murphy's cans were bulged out at the bottom. The bimbo that runs the place said "it's ok" Well I sure can taste a difference The only thing I think would cause it would be too much heat during shipping.
