Why do pupils dilate on some drugs?

I've always wondered - why is it that pupils dilate on drugs? and why is it that some drugs don't do this?

I heard something about hallucinogens causeing your brain to think the atmosphere is darker, so your pupils dilate to let in more light.. It could be beacuase of all the visuals too!!

I knew someone was gonna say the chlorophyl thing.....you obviously missed the point. Your pupils dialate cause thats just what happens. Although grove said some interesting theories....I honestly don't agree with him at all. I think visuals are the result of, not the cause of the pupil dialation.

There prolly is an actual answer to this question, something to do with our brain and different receptors and shit and somehow the various hallicinogens do something specific to a specific part of our brain which causes pupil dialation.........which is what I ment with my first post. It's just what happens.

i know pupil constriction is mediated by the sympathetic nervous system. stimulation of alpha 1 adrenergic receptor causes the smooth muscles in in pupils to constrict.
so..my guess would be the drugs effect your sympathetic nervous system in a way that blocks these receptors and allows the muscles that control your pupil to relax.?
just my thoughts...i'm sure its more complex than this.

Your pupils dialate on coke and meth and there aren't any visuals. I think visuals have to do with something totally different. Dialated pupils might help though!

Thats a very interesting point, it all has something to do with brain signals and receptors and shit I'm sure.

What I ment by it causes the visuals though, is your pupils are huge so more light enters the eyes.....making things brighter and whatnot. Thats all I was saying with that, it's all really goin on in the brain.

When a foreign substance is introduced into your body and starts affecting the way you function, the natural reaction is adrenaline: your heart rate increases, your eyes dilate. It's like shock. Same thing happens if you are in a high stress situation.

If so then the guy who directed Fear and Loathing must've made something wrong, because when Duke ate the adrenochrome his pupils were the size of a needle.

On another note, pupil dilation also occurs when you see someone you're attracted to, and pupil constriction occurs when you see someone you actively dislike. Dilated pupils are considered more attractive than constricted ones, and this is why Belladonna is Italian for beautiful lady, where the woman in Italy would take Belladonna to dilate their pupils.

I believe Adrenochrome is not actually psychoactive, it's just a myth.

Ah, that might be why. I always thought it was due to similar actions, as in similar addiction, combinations with other opiates (like speedballing) and pain relief, but if it's not actually an opiate... then what is it? A CNS stimulant, of course, but cocaine and crack would have a category of their own?

an opiate comes from opium. opiates come from the poppy plant while cocaine comes from the coca plant.
